In the story, Hemingway showed that the American wife can’t fully control herself. On impulse, she went out in the rain to get the cat. Not finding the cat, she told George so many things she wanted. Women, in general, can be impulsive at times. We also tend to verbalize and speak out what’s in our mind.
American wife who can't control her life might represent some true life in American. They can afford an expensive vacation, but desperate and furious in other part of life. Like American wife she may wants a child instead of she wants a cat; she may be sick and tired of her status quo instead of her hairstyle. Some people find something distraction to cover their real wants.
