The American wife said “I want a kitty” or “I want a cat” five times totally in the story. By the repetition, readers are impressed with the loneliness, vacuousness and self-centeredness of female protagonist. I believe that is the reason Hemingway includes this repetition.
Hemingway is showing the husband’s lack of concern and attention toward his wife by repeating five times that he is reading, “George went on reading,” or“ He is reading again.”
Ernest Hemingway in "Cat in the Rain" uses "I want" eleven times in the conversation between George and his wife. The repetition of "I want" shows the materialism and the emptiness of the American woman.I believe the woman doesn't know what she wants to fill her loneliness.
One repetition that Hemingway uses in the story is the word rain. The word rain is repeated 8 time in the story. I believe that Hemingway is doing this help give the reader a better feeling of the story.
The word “cat” or “kitty” was repeated 20 times in the story. I think Hemingway wanted to strongly emphasize the American wife’s object of desire; and that the cat, whatever it symbolizes, will fill the loneliness & emptiness in the wife’s life.
Hemingway uses "poor kitty" three times. He seems to imply that the American wife is like the helpless, loneliness, uncomfortable, and painful "poor kitty" in the rain. She needs more concern and protection, especially from her husband.
“It was raining”. Hemingway repeats to mention “the rain” nine times in the story. I think “the rain” symbolizes the obstacle between the American couple; it seems to foreshow their pessimistic future. On the other hand, the “raining” day strengthens the atmosphere of gloominess and the wife’s isolation feeling.
