The hotel-keeper is friendly and responsible. He seems like a private servant serving the American wife. Particularly he sends a maid with an umbrella when he notices the lady is going out alone in the rain. He even tries to find the cat and have the maid take it to her room. That all reflect that the padrone is devoted and sympathetic, comparing to the husband’cold and carelessness.

One personality trait of the American wife is her emotional instability, brought about by a deep feeling of unfilled emptiness in her life. This is shown by her childish ways to get attention, especially from her husband, her strong feelings for the hotelkeeper and her desire for many things.

One of the personal trait of the American woman is her loneliness. They are far away from home, and don’t know any of the people. Although her husband is accompanying her, he doesn’t pay attention to her, “ he reads all the time, “ she is as lonely as the cat in the rain. She needs changes and entertainment, “ If I can‘t have long hair or any fun, I can have a cat.”

One of the hotel-keepers personality is that he is very caring person. He always went out of his way to be nice to the American wife. The house-keeper would bow to the American wife when she walked by. The house-keeper sent the maid outside with umbrella to keep her dry. When the Amerian wife comes back with no cat; the house-keeper get the maid to find the cat and makes sure that the American wife gets the cat.

One personality trait for the American woman is emotional emptiness. This is due to the fact that her husband shows no affection towards her. For example, he continues reading his book when she tells him all the things that she wants and then tells her to “shut up and get something to read”, instead of listening to her.

One of the American wife’s personality traits is her childishness. In order to acquire more attention from her husband, she acts in ways under her age and speaks in the kids’ tone. Repeating on “I wanted that poor kitty” and claiming to change her hairstyle reflect her childlike desire. Naming her from the American wife to the American girl, Hemingway also implies the protagonist’s immature behaviors.
