Setting at the county fair
Pendleton's easygoing personality allows him to ask the fat lady a few embarrassing questions. "She laughed a great deal with us, but she was evidently touched by his human interest." In this setting it shows the conversion is quite bewildering, and can be offending. Instead, she enjoys their company by laughing it off. "When we went away she pressed on us a bag of peanuts." The county fair brought a unique connection between them and so, the peanuts she had saved were given as a reward.

There are a lot of things that tell us about Gran'ther Pendleton's character. "He pushed me ahead." This shows that Gran'ther is stubborn and doesn't usually take no for an answer. At his old-age he still has the stamina and spirit of a younger man. "Adventurous spirit irresistible."

Atmosphere Example

Fisher skilfully creates a cheerful triumphant atmosphere in the story by means of Pendleton’s conduct and his attitude towards life, encouraging readers to live not half-life, but “to give a whoop and let her rip.” Mallory deliberately, in an easy tone, tells Farrar the incredible story about his Gran’ther, an example of a man, obsessed by passion of living with enthusiasm and a great courage.
