There are many characters in this story that may be considered stereotypical. The Professor Jo Mallory is two kinds of stereotypes, the wise Professor and the responsible young boy. In the beginning of the story he guiding his assistant by telling him a story to help him through hard times. In the story he pleads responsibly "But Gran'ther, Father said we mustn’t" protesting that they not disobey his Father. Farrar is another stereotype, a assistant, very stressed out and nervous possibly carrying too heavy a load, "I don't sleep...I worry...I forget things." he tells the Professor The Father is another stereotype-the overprotective, strict dad, says "No in the tone that we children recognize as final". The mother is also a stereotype mom caring and consoling her son, when he falls to the ground she holds him and says "Mother's bad, dear little boy." That is the perfect example of a Mothers unconditional love. Gran'ther has stereotypical qualities in the story. He is a crazy old guy, he is also adventurous and brave-believes in living everyday like it’s your last and making the most of life. His motto is 'Live while you live, and then die and be done with it’. The young boy looks up to his gran'ther for being this way and teaching him how to live life to the fullest.
Just add on any extra thoughts you guys have on the stereotypes in the story. I wont be back on here tonight because I am working late. See you tomorrow! Don't forget to study the story for the test!
Stereotype means an over-generalized and preconceived idea or impression of what characterizes someone or something, especially one that does not allow for any individuality or variation; characterizes someone or something. I think in this story the father, the son of grandfather and the doctor show stereotypical behavior about grandfather. Both of them think going to country fair is impossible and crazy for old man because old man is too weak to travel for a long way. They have fixed thought for old men. They don’t allow for any individuality and variation. I can find father’s stereotypical behavior in this sentence “Father never dared let gran’ther go anywhere without himself accompanying the old man.” The other example of stereotypical behavior is an attitude of the doctor. He said about grandfather’s desire to go to the country fair “It would be crazy to think of such a thing.”Their thought is very fixed, they don't think someone can be different.
I think father is a very rational man. He asks Gran’ther to stay in the farm with a strict tone, but he doesn’t try to comfort Gran’ther. He just leaves “No” as his final decision. However, father is also a thoughtful person, because when he found out Gran’ther went to the county fair, he just worried, instead of blame.
Farrar is a man who too nervous. He worries too much about his life, because his thinking complicates everything. He worries he can’t get his opportunities in his life (the opportunity of being a teacher in summer school), but he also worried his health is going worse.
Former adult teacher who loves island beaches. Happy homebody and family man; once devoted dog owner, now without Tashi, my Tibetan Terrier. I prefer the absurdity of the imagination to the absurdity of imagining nothing.
