Chapter 4
Question 1

Stradlater is Holden's roommate at Pencey, who Holden thinks is madly in love with himself. Holden refers to Stradlater as a "secret slob" because he uses a rusty razor full of hairs and lather to shave his face with and he never cleans it. Once he finishes shaving he miraculously looks good. Stradlater is the same height as Holden but weighs twice as much and has very broad shoulders. According to Holden, Stradlater is a pretty handsome individual but "he was mostly a year book handsome of a guy," and their are much more handsome guys at Pencey than Stradlater.

Chapter 15
Question 1

Holden thinks that it spoils a conversation when someone asks about his religion because even though it didn't ruin a good conversation, it sure didn't add anything good. Holden once knew a Catholic boy name Louis Shaney, who is first boy he ever met at Whooton School and they were having an interesting conversation about going to tennis Nationals at Forest Hills and hot shot tennis players. Right in the middle of their conversation Louis asks " Did you happen to notice where the Catholic Church is in town by any chance." Holden could tell that the way Louis asked him he wanted to find out if Holden was Catholic and even though they were having such a great conversation, Louis would have enjoyed it more if Holden was Catholic. Holden said "That kind of stuff drives me crazy."

Chapter 25, Question 2
Reading the article about cancer terrifies Holden. He thinks he has cancer and will die in a couple of months. While he is walking, suddenly “something spooky started happening.” (Pg197) Every time he comes to the end of a block, he thinks that he will never get to the other side of the street. He feels he “would just go down, down, down and nobody’d ever see me [Holden] again.” (Pg.197) This situation also scares him. By getting to the end of block, he believes he can talk to his brother (Allie). He repeatedly asks him for help, “Allie don’t let me disappear.”(Pg.198) after he reaches the other side of the street, he thanks him.

Chapter 17 question 1

Holder thinks most of men are “mean and boring,” he regards them as “dopey guys,” “phonies,” and “jerks.” Compare with this feelings, he is attracted by “swell girls” and enjoys having dealings with them, although sometimes he “didn’t even like them.” He respects some women, like “two nuns,” and thinks them “polite and nice.” More important, Holden tries to find out the love and supports from women. He wishes to stay in cabin camp with Sally; he desires to keep connection with Jane Gallagher; and he shows concern for his little sister and is deeply attached to her.

Chapter 25 question 3

Although Holden uses lots of bad language, he is still upset that curse words were written on a school wall. He worries these words would affect the children who would see them. He wishes to shelter children from any dirty world and hopes them keep innocence and purity.

Chapter 2 Question 1

There are number of small thing's that Spencer did that annoyed Holden.
Holden did not like it when Spencer was walking around in a bathrobe
showing his bumpy old chest and his old mans legs that are white and
unhairy and that he smelled like Vicks nose drops. Holden also did not
like it when people repeated themselves over and over. However I think
that one thing that really annoyed Holden was that Spencer was trying to
help him and that Spencer may actually care that Holden was failing his
classes.

Chapter 24 Question 2

Holden went to visit some old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Antolini. Has the
evening went on Holden began to become very sleepy and Mr. Antolini
offered Holden to spend the night. Mr. Antolini told Holden that he could
sleep on the couch. Holden agreed to spend the night . A short time after
Holden fell a sleep he was unexpectedly woken up to find Mr. Antolini
hand on his head. Which scared the hell out of Holden. It turns out that
Mr. Antolini was sitting by were Holden was sleeping and was petty
Holden's head. This also lead Holden to believe that Mr. Antolini was
a pervert. Which Holden has had bad experiences in the past.

Chapter 26 question 1
Holden doesn’t want to tell anyone anything because he doesn’t like the feeling of missing some people. On the one hand, he hopes others will understand what he thinks because he is lonely; on the other hand, he fears to have intimate relationship with others because his feeling is too feeble and most people around him are phonies. I believe Holden tries to step over his self-protection boundary and chooses to build up a new relationship with others in the end of the novel.

Chapter 3 question 2
Ackley suddenly enters into Holden’s room and interrupts Holden’s reading by asking many stupid questions. He rummages through Holden and his roommate’s things, cuts his “crumby” fingernails on the floor, squeezes his pimples, and shows his “mossy-looking” teeth regardless of Holden’s feeling and request. Holden constantly gives him hints to leave but he ignores them all, until Stradlater returns.

Comments from group one

Chapter 25, question #2,

Zahra’s answer is more about what happen to Holden. Here is the suggestion: Holden keeps repeating “Allie, don’t let me disappear” because he needs Allie’s help to keep him from death. In chapter 25, Holden images he has cancer and would die which scares him to death and he needs help. Holden used to trust Mr. Antolini, but Mr. Antolini disappointed him, so, Holden turns to believe in his brother, Allie, who Holden thinks will never change. As a result, whenever Holden feels desperation he calls Allie for help.

Chapter 25, question #3,

Generally, Gloria provides a good answer with a clear statement and conclusion. After the group discussion, perhaps Gloria could add some quotes in the second sentence to make it becomes: He worries these “drove me crazy” words would affect the children who would see it and understand the meaning from “some dirty kid”, and the children would not only “think” but also “worry” about it. (p.201)

Answer’s revision (Chapter 7, Question1—Zahra)

The topic sentence is not very clear. Actually Holden’s emotion is mainly affected by his inner feelings. In the sentence structure, we can replace “One” and “Another” with “firstly” and “secondly” respectively.
Revision:
Holden’s emotion is mainly affected by his depression and loneliness. But there are some occurrences that directly drive him crying as he is leaving Pencey. Firstly he gets expelled from school. Secondly, he figures that his parents will get Thurmer’s letter. Finally, he becomes very nervous when he has realized about Strdlater’s date with his friend Jane. After Stradlater comes back, Holden makes an excuse and fights with him. Leaving his room into the Akcley’s room, Holden tries not to think about them, “but it was almost impossible.”(p49) Those happenings add fuel to the flames and “almost wished I [Holden] was dead.”

Answer’s revision (Chapter 17, Question1—Gloria)

Overall the content is clear. The quotes are accurate except a bit overrun. It will be better if adding a topic sentence.
Revision:
Holden’s feelings for women are different with that for men. Holden thinks most men are “mean and boring.” He also regards them as dopey guys, phonies, and jerks. On the other hand, Holden is attracted by “swell girl.” He respects women and thinks them “polite and nice.” And more, Holden tries to seek love and support from women. For example, he wishes to stay with Sally in the cabin camp; he desires to keep connection with Jane Gallagher; he shows concerns for his little sister and is deeply attached to her.

Chapter 24 Question#2

After I read Russ answer I suggest some information may help Russ.
The topic sentence and the sentence after it are like a summary why Holden is visiting Mr. antolini.I prefer to change it to answering the question.
The conclusion sentence needs to put a litlle bit of details .for example how many times happens to Holden and where.
Russ did not use a quote I agree with him I thing the answer did not need a quote.

Chapter 15 Question# 1

llOyd answer to the question is clear and simple. The quotes LLOyd uses are good and it clarifies why Holden thinks to know the religion spoils the conversation .
I have to tell LLoyd that when e we use a quote from a novel ,we have to put the page number after the quote.
