A Short Memoir; Using Patrick Lane's First Paragraph as a Model

Use Patrick Lane’s first paragraph (128 words; your paragraph should be the same length exactly) as a model to write about a memory of your own. You may use some of his words; for example, I follow the model of Lane’s first sentence but tell my own story: “Back in the summer of 1974, I was 18 years old, working for the cook and living in a mining exploration camp with 23 men 50 kilometers shy of the Arctic Circle.”

Note how I've used the same number of words (32) and almost the same structure. Do the same, as much as you can. Post to the blog as a “comment”; I will post an example on the weekend. Bring your work, word processed and double spaced, to class that day.

If you would like to read the first draft writing I did in class, these are provided below in Word 2007 format (docx).

Back in the winter of 2003, I was eight years old, landing in a new foreign land clutching my mom’s hand for support. I came to this unknown land nearly ten years ago, it was scary and yet frightening at the same time. I felt insecure without my mom’s hand, and yet I was scared, I didn’t want to leave home, I didn’t say good byes to my friends, I don’t want to leave my daring grandparents, we left without saying a word. It seemed there was a long wait at the airport, but I finally saw my dad, he was glad to see me. It was then I started my life as a foreigner, on an unfamiliar land without knowing anything about this particular beautiful but devastating continent.

Back in the summer of 1974, I was 18 years old, working for the cook and living in a mining exploration camp with 23 men 50 kilometers shy of the Arctic Circle. (32 words) I had a job helping the camp cook for a company called Cominco that was diamond drilling for core samples of silver and gold ore hidden under the arctic tundra now threatened by climate change. (35 words) I remember walking atop an *esker into the wind to keep the masses of voracious mosquitoes at bay. (18 words) I stood there relishing the lack of bugs as I stared into the distance at rocks and boulders as far as I could see. (24 words) The whine of insects was constant. (6 words) The only gift given on that early spring day was a hard, driving wind. (14 words)

* a long narrow winding ridge of sand or gravel, deposited by a stream flowing under a glacier

It’s a challenge! Note the length of each sentence and then play around with ideas and statements until you come close to the length. Good luck getting those long sentences right. It takes perseverance and a good eye for detail.

Remember that the basic “main idea” of your sentences can be different but try to remain coherent and say something meaningful.

Hi Everyone,

Two students have caught an error in my example (which I will leave up in any case) where the second sentence should contain 34 words and not 35.

As I said to one of them, if any student comes within one word (127 or 129), he or she has done very well. If you nail 128 hooray!

My apologies! See you Wednesday.

Back in the winter of 1998, I was 23 years old, studying in an electrical engineering college and living in a quiet apartment with 2 girls 5 kilometers north of Aleppo city. I was preparing for the graphic final exam with two close friends whom I have known since my lovely childhood where we lived in a charming lake side village away from the noisy dusty city. I remember an attractive tall lady who wore a pretty tight pink dress with white dots and lines. She explained her failure in the exam last year because she was raped and hit by her father in the basement of his work. Her story shocked and scared me. The only thing that flashed in my mind is beauty can be a curse.

After landed here from China, I became a student again with a bunch of the other immigrations studying English since 15 years ago I left school entering the workplace as a career woman. I remember one day walking along a path of a nearby park with the tenant after dinner on a chilly early spring . We strolled there talking hopes and fears as two new comers with nothing in this country. A sudden hail hit the ground and pond. We stood under a tree gazed into the grey sky , the only gift given on that cold evening was changeable and unpredictable.
