Teaser: Angst comes somewhere; solving it here is a way. Read more...

Ranting for a Day

Something bothers you. To rant is a way to solve it, and it works. Here is my experience.

One of my teeth has been bugging me quit a lot lately. However, I dislike seeing my dentist, but I had to. With an appointment, still, it is a big deal- time consuming (normally, half to an hour waiting in the dental clinic). Today was even a bigger deal. One hour and fifteen minutes after the appointment time when my dentist with a grin said to me,“ Hi Olivia, how are you doing today? I will be with you in a minute.”

“What! How long is his one minute” I wonder, “am I have been here for 75 minutes?” I noted him to peer at his stylish watch frequently. What is that mean? Is it funny? It isn’t funny at all.

“Holy moly! Noble doctor! You don’t know how to count minutes, let me tell you one minute is 60 seconds, and one second just is a de-de. You are a highly educated person and knows on time is a virtue.” I was yelling in my heart, but I was wimp. I don’t know what happen next. All I could do was more waiting. Therefore, I would be late to pick up my sister in the airport, too. Damn it when I got out of the clinic.

Now, I got that off my chest; I feel better and lighter. The angst vanished far away. There is a benefit of ranting for a day. How about you? Try it. You will see.

Go to Hell Together

Canada is a multicultural country. People with different religions live here along with non-religious people. It’s great that people have freedom to choose to be religious or non-religious. The story I’m telling was happened at my work place.

One day, on my break time, a co-worker asked me if I had any religion. I said no. She was quite shocked. I told her I grew up in a family without any religion and I had been taught at school that human beings were monkeys long long ago and there is no spirit after a person’s death. She was more shocked. She told me that I should believe in God otherwise my spiritual world would be empty. For my whole break, she suggested me some books about God to read. Eventually, she became very disappointed by my silence and she said: “you know, not believing in God is the biggest sin in Bible. People who don’t believe in God will go to hell after they die.”

Honestly, I was pretty upset after that conversation. Later I told my husband what happened. He laughed at me and said: “Don’t worry, dear, you forget I’m same as you, so we’ll go to hell together.”

Marriage is about two or not

When Xiao Xi was fell in love, she believed marriage is just related to two individuals; she refused her mother’s advice “Once two people got married, it means they married with the other’s whole social relationships; and the marriage is not only about the two, it makes two extended families join together.”

What will happen next? “New Times of Marriage” attracts me to find the result.

The husband,JianGuo,came from remote, poor, and ignorant countryside. After he graduated from a university, he got married and lived in big city. In contrast, his wife, Xiao Xi, came from a knowledgeable family. Because they have total different social background, they face lots of contradictions and misunderstandings. His extended family becomes his heavy burden. In order to balance between his parents and his own family, and to satisfy his parents, JianGuo has to constantly sacrifice his money, time, energy, even the love to his wife. These endless quarrels and misapprehensions cause failure of their marriage.

This result causes me to consider about what is the most important thing in our marriage? Which factor direct marriage, the feeling of love or the sense of extended family members? Is marriage a matter between only two people or two group of social relationship?

The novel is not finish! After they self-exam themselves, they confirm Love is the first thing, and they walk on red carpet again.
It is “New Times of Marriage.”

Teaser: The man behind the stage curtain.
Tuning the Soul

Calmly and quietly, a piano stands on the stage. No one else, but a tuner, notices it after a flash of applause and ovation. Compared to the artists’ splendid performance, the tuner purely plays a few harmonic chords; however, they are the soul of the piano.

Combined of hundreds of steel strings and thousands of wood action parts, the piano is the most complicated musical instrument. It in fact is the tuner who touches the mint piano first. Later on, because of the attribute of wood and steel, the piano is easily out of tune at the changing temperature and humidity during the four seasons.

With the very basic tools—a bundle of tuning forks and a tuning hammer, the tuner sets the sound at a particular pitch.
Besides being born with perfect earring, he also needs to complete a particular training. Responding to an electronic machine for tuning, Peter Crosby said, “It will take the soul out of the instrument. That’s what I tune--the soul of the piano.”

The artists bring life to the piano, but the tuners give the piano the soul.

WHAT ARE THEY?

When I lived in North Burnaby in 2003, Bill and Ann was my neighbor. Bill was a kind and quiet man and his wife, Ann, was an excellent cook. Her delicious cookies always impressed me.
When Chinese Mid-Autumn festival was near, I gave a box of green bean cakes to Bill and told him that these small lovely cakes were very popular Mid-Autumn festival snacks in Taiwan. Four days later, I was invited to Ann’s home and found that the box of green bean cakes remained untouched. I asked her why they didn’t eat the cakes. Astonished, she replied, “What? Are they snacks?”
“Of course, doesn’t Bill tell you what they are?” I asked.
“No. He just says he gets them from you. I think they are Chinese face soaps because there is no English information on them," she answered.
When I heard it, the picture that she was washing her face with the strange crispy green soap appeared in my mind.
I never dreamed that green bean cakes could be mistaken for green soap. Besides, I learned that the clear communication was very important.

Language culture is important in communication
People in Kyrgyzstan, where I lived for several years, have their own language culture. For example: when they want to show that they won’t do something they say, “I would do that three times” so I thought they wanted to do whatever it was three times.

I started my education in medical university when I was totally unfamiliar with their culture. Students of our university had practice to take care of elderly people for a month while we, foreign students, were free . My classmates decided to do their work in pairs. The next day they all were talking about their jobs, one of the girls said, “They wanted us to clean their toilets, and we did that three times” I was surprised, a rude girl like her can do that kind of job “three times”? So I asked, “Why three times?” You can imagine the reaction.

So, to communicate better we should learn the language culture beside grammar and words.

THE SECRET
DO YOU KNOW THE SECRET?
The secret is a book and dvd by Rhonda Byrne. The book
talks about the laws of attractions. Law of attraction is when
you think about something positive and positive things will be
attracted to you; the same goes for negative things. For
example the other day I wanted a bowel of my favorite ice cream.
I first pictured that bowel of ice cream sitting in front of me. Then
I took that image and placed it in my subconscious and by doing
this I was sending out a vibration into the universe and the universe
attracted that bowel of ice cream. The universe is like a big catalog
and you can have anything that your heart desires to have. By
applying this theory to my own life I have been able to experience
many different things. This theory can be applied to ones health,
happiness, relationships and wealth. I invite all of you to read and
watch the dvd and I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

The Diet and the Blood Type

After I read the book,"Eat Right 4 Your Type" by Dr.Peter J.D'Adamo I was surprized to know that is a connection between my blood type and my diet.
My blood type plays a huge role in which food I have to eat, and what type of exercise I should do.
In addition, the blood type controls how much my body burns calories, responses to stress and even my personality.
For example,a person from a blood type "O" looses weight when he eats more animal protein, on the other hand a person from a blood type "A" looses weight when he almost stop eating animal protein. Meat stores as a fat with a "A" blood type person, and it helps to loose weight fast with a "O" blood type person.
This is why some diet works with certain people, and it did not work with the others.
There is not a wrong diet, but there is a wrong choice of diet.
When I follow a lifestyle and a diet works with my blood type according to the book I will be balanced emotionally and physically.

A major issue for new immigrants is language, but culture is equally important. Read more….

Hidden culture

Every immigrant knows by living in a new country that it is necessary to learn the language. In reality, understanding new culture is also as significant as the language. I have a memory about the new culture from my past day of ESL class in Hamilton, Ontario. The first day I arrived to class ten minutes early. I sat on a chair and waited for our teacher to come. When my teacher walked into the class, as usual, I stood up and at the same time looked around. No one was standing. This act confused my classmates and also my teacher. She was wondering if I wanted something, but I didn’t. I just followed my culture I got embarrassed and sat back on my chair. Since that day, I have never got up from my seat when a teacher has entered the class. This experience taught me one of many lessons I have learned about Canadian culture. (175 words)

Article from Cynthia Su:

Become an English Writer

It's long been my goal to become a writer, not only a Chinese writer, but also an English writer. That seems like a joke now.

However, there're some successful case ahead of me. If I try really hard , I believe that I may have chance to reach my goal one day.

My role model, an American writer, Ha Jin, was born in China, and was an Army member from 1987-1995. He moved to the United States of America in his middle age, and he started to write in English. He conquered the hard time, day after day, night after night, kept writing. He now is the author of two short story collections, winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award, and received the Flannery O'Connor Award. His novel Waiting, which received the 1999 National Book Award. Ha Jin has made China available to a new world and a world of new readers. His success encourage me so much. I feel it worth a try.

My Precious Wife

One afternoon, I rode bikes with my son, I saw a lady walk out from the U-haul truck parked beside my apartment. Usually, I was not a curious person, but this time I stopped to watch, not only because she is going to move into the unit next to me, but also I was attracted by this beautiful lady who came with two little children. I politely said hello to her to show my welcome as a neighbour.

She was charming and I did not know why I had a strong feeling that she was fragile and needed someone to protect. I started to like her. After I knew she lost her husband, I imposed myself to her. We have similarities: a single parent, a sports player and a dogs’ lover.

Once, my son had an accident which put him into coma. She took good care of him and encouraged me not to give up. The more we gathered, the more we knew we needed each other. I decided to say,” Will you marry me?” Now we have five grandchildren. I was so thankful that she came into my life. (190 words)
