A Rant for a Day

One of mine tooth has been bugging me quit a lot lately. However, I hate to see my dentist. With an appointment, still, it is a big deal- time consuming (normally, half to an hour waiting in the dental clinic). Today was even a bigger deal one hour and fifteen minutes after the appointment time when my dentist with a phony smile said to me,“ Hi Olivia, how a you doing today? I will be with you in a minute”

Is it funny? It isn't funny at all. I know his time is worth. Besides, I noted he wore a stylish watch and peer at it frequently. I thought, “Holy moly! Do I need to complain again or change a dentist? He is a high educated person and knows on time is a virtue, isn't he?” “Please, be on time, noble doctor!” my heart was swearing. Therefore, I would be late to pick up my sister in the airport that I felt so sorry.

Now, I rant it and publish it in the blog; I feel better and lighter. There is a banefit for a rant for a day.

The Secret

Do You Know The Secret?

Is a book and dvd about the laws of attraction. We attract the things the come in to our life’s and the things that we attract effects the universe around us. You ask how we can possibly effect the universe. Its a lot easier then you really think. See we our all spirits, non - physical. We our all made up of atoms and molecules the same as the universe. If we think of positive thing’s we will attract positive thing’s in to our life’s the same goes for negative thing’s. In other words like energy attracts like energy. For example say you want a cup of coffee. First you must imange that cup of coffee then you must take that image and then see that in your subconscious and when you do that you our sending out a vibration into the universe and then the universe will attract that cup of coffee to you. This example also applies to your health, wealth, relationships and happiness. I invite all of you to read or watch the dvd and I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

Religious better? Non-religious better?

Canada is a multicultural country and people with different religions are living here also non-religious people. The story I’m telling is about religion and was happened at my working place.
One day, when I was taking my break in the staff room, one co-worker asked me if I have any religion. I said no. She was quite shocked. I told her I grow up in a family without any religion and I had been taught at school human beings were monkeys long long ago and there is no spirit after a person’s death. She was more shocked and told me that I should believe in God otherwise my spiritual world is empty. For my whole break time she was suggesting me to read some books about God. Eventually, she was very disappointed by my silence and she said: “you know, not believing in God is the most sin in Bible and people who don’t believe in God will go to hell after they die.”
Honestly, I was pretty upset after that conversation. Later I told my husband what happened, but he laughed at me and said: “Don’t worry, dear, you forget I am same as you, so we’ll go to hell together.”

My Precious Wife

One afternoon, I rode bikes with my son, I saw a lady walk out from the U-haul truck parked beside my apartment. Usually, I was not a curious person, but this time I stopped to watch, not only because she is going to move into the unit next to me, but also I was attracted by this beautiful lady who came with two little children. I politely said hello to her to show my welcome as a neighbour.

She was charming and I did not know why I had a strong feeling that she was fragile and needed someone to protect. I started to like her. After I knew she lost her husband, I imposed myself to her. We have similarities: a single parent, a sports player and a dogs’ lover.

Once, my son had an accident which put him into coma. She took good care of him and encouraged me not to give up. The more we gathered, the more I knew she needed me and I needed her too. I decided to say,” Will you marry me?”to her.

Now we have five grandchildren. I was so thankful that she came into my life. (196 words)

The Soul of the Piano

Calmly and quietly, a piano stands on the stage. No one else, but a tuner, notices it after a flash of applause and ovation. Comparing to the artists’ splendid performance skill, the tuners simply play a series of two notes of fourths or fifths; however, they are the soul of the piano.

Combined of hundreds of steel strings and thousands of wood action parts, the piano is the most complicate music instrument in the world. It is the fact that the tuner touches the mint piano first. Later on, because of the attribute of wood and steel, the piano is easy to be out of tune under the changing temperature and humidity during the four seasons.

“It looks very simple, but when you try to do it yourself, it becomes quite difficult,” said one of the great artists Peter Crosby. With the very simple tools—a bundle of tuning forks and a tuning hammer, the tuner must be born with truly perfect pitch and have been trained for a long term.

The artists bring the piano the life, and the tuners bring the piano the soul.

A major issue for new immigrant is language, but culture is equally important. Read more……

When I came to Canada, my English was not good. I went to an ESL class in Hamilton. I have never forgot the first day when I arrived in the class, I was ten minutes early. I sat on a chair and waited for our teacher to come. When my teacher walked into the class, as usual, I stood up and at the same time I looked around, but no one else was standing. This act amazed my classmates and also my teacher. She was wondering if I wanted something, but I didn’t. I was just following my culture. I got embarrassed and sat down on my chair again. Since that day, I have never got up from my seat when my teacher enters the class. This experience taught me one of many lessons I have learned about Canadian culture.

The Future Generation

"My grandma told me I could not play with you.You are a terrorist."My neighbour's eight years old son said it to my son while they were talking in my back yard.
My son entered the house confused, crying and shocking. He was questioning himself,"What I did to Tom{my neighbour's son}? I did not do anything bad to him."
Then he came to me asking,"Mom are we a terrorist people?"
The question was enough to sherd my heart and all my flesh. It made me numb enough time to make my son asking,"Are you Okay mom?'
The moment,I was numb, made me reflect about the media, and the job the journalist are doing to the society. They put the hate and the reject to other nationalities or other religions.
Canada is a multicultural society. To race the racism in Canada is like playing with the fire.I hope the government educates people not to judge by race or colour or nationality.

Getting familiar with a new culture

In my trip outside of our country my friend, who is a religious person, accompanied me. The first thing she noticed in Uzbekistan’s airport was a girl with a very short skirt. The bare legs were a shock to her because she never saw that kind of a picture during her lifetime. Can you imagine what she did? She just stared at her for a long time, and then started laughing at her. Her friend noticed us, and whispered something. The girl turned to us, I looked away.I really was embarrassed.

People there when they want to show that they won’t do something they say, “I would do that three times” so I thought they were doing that three times. Native students of medical university had practice to take care of elderly people for a month. My classmates were doing that in pairs. The next day they all were talking about their jobs, one of the girls said, “They wanted us to clean their toilets, and we did that three times” I was surprised, a rude girl like her can do that “three times”, so I asked, “Why three times?” You can imagine the reaction.

WHAT ARE THEY?
I learn that the clear communication is very important through Bill and Ann. When I lived in North Burnaby in 2003, Bill and Ann was my neighbor. Bill was a kind and quiet man and his wife, Ann, was a warm and excellent cook. I always tasted different delicious cookies she made. When Chinese Mid-Autumn festival was near, I gave a box of green bean cakes to them. I told Bill that green bean cake was one of the popular Mid-Autumn festival snacks in Taiwan. Four days later, I was invited to Ann’s home and suddenly found that box of green bean cakes remained untouched. I asked her why they didn’t eat the cakes. Astonished, she replied, “What? Are they snacks?” I answered, “Of course. Didn’t Bill tell you what they were?” she said, “No. he just said they were given by you. I thought they were Chinese face soaps because there was no English information.” When I heard her statement, the picture that she washed her face with the strange crispy green soap appeared in my mind. I never dreamed that green bean cakes might be mistaken for green soaps due to unclear explanation.

What is the marriage

I read a novel named “New Times of Marriage,” which is about the marriage of a young couple.

The husband, Wei, came from remote countryside; his parents and relatives are poor and ignorant. After he graduated from a university, he got married and lived in big city. In contrast, his wife, Xiao Xi, came from a knowledgeable family. Because they have total different social background, they face lots of contradictions and misunderstandings. In order to balance between his parents and his own family, and satisfy his parents and relatives, Wei has to constantly sacrifice his money, time, energy, even the love to his wife. These endless quarrels and misapprehensions cause failure of their marriage.

“Once two people got married, it means they married with his/her whole social relationships; the marriage makes two extended families join together.”

These let me consider about what is the most important thing in our marriage; which factor, the feeling of love or the sense of extended family members, direct our marriage; is marriage a matter between only two people or two group of social relationship?

As immigrant, we face tons of cultural differences. We can accept something we understand, refuse anything we detest, and ignore something we dislike. However, we can not neglect the different concepts about marriage, because it will influence the quality of our next generations’ life.

I am puzzled. I expect to get the answer.

Here's Cynthia Su's article:

What a civil society

Despite a petition that includes more than 3,000 people, as well as negotiations that are ongoing with TransLink, Formosa Nursery Farms in Langley has been cut in half recently. I have contacted to farm owner as a reporter, and felt so sorry for them.

The farm has about 10,000 organic blueberry bushes, and has been owned by the same family for 30 years , and for three generations. In order to build the Golden Ears Bridge, four and half of acres of Formosa Farm's land must be used by TransLink. Farm owners only receive $45,000/acre in compensation for their land.

The government always says, "civil society". But why are they being so cruel to a family that has been willing to sacrefice themself for the public interest? Before a deal of blueberry compensation, the heavy equipment hired by TransLink moved in early one recent morning and began bulldozing the farm's hedge, waking up the owners.

The sincere owners jumped out of bed in a desperate effort to save their organic blueberry bushes, but were only able to save about 100 while another 99% will be destroyed.

If you are the owner, what will you do? They paid more than 10000 to hire lawers. However, as the time goes by, the lawers may gain all the money that the farmers received.

Ranting for a Day

Something bothers you. To rant is a way to solve it, and it works. Here is my recent experience.

One of mine teeth has been bugging me quit a lot lately. However, I dislike seeing my dentist, but I had to. With an appointment, still, it is a big deal- time consuming (normally, half to an hour waiting in the dental clinic). Today was even a bigger deal one hour and fifteen minutes after the appointment time when my dentist with a big grin said to me,“ Hi Olivia, how are you doing today? I will be with you in a minute.”

“Oh! How long is his one minute” I wonder, “am I have been here for enough long?” I noted peered at his stylish watch frequently. What is that mean? Is it funny? It isn’t funny at all.

“Holy moly! Noble bastard! You don’t know how to manage time, let me tell you. You are a highly educated person and knows on time is a virtue.” I wanted to yell, but I was wimp. I don’t know what happen next. All I could do was more waiting. Therefore, I would be late to pick up my sister in the airport, too. Damn it.

Now, that I got that off my chest; I feel better and lighter. There is a benefit of ranting for a day. How about you? Try it. You will see.

Become an English Writer

It's long been my goal to become a writer, not only a Chinese writer, but also an English writer. That seems like a joke now.

However, there're some successful case ahead of me. If I try really hard , I believe that I may have chance to reach my goal one day.

My role model, an American writer, Ha Jin, was born in China, and was an Army member from 1987-1995. He moved to the United States of America in his middle age, and he started to write in English. He conquered the hard time, day after day, night after night, kept writing. He now is the author of two short story collections, winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award, and received the Flannery O'Connor Award. His novel Waiting, which received the
1999 National Book Award. Ha Jin has made China available to a new world and a world of new readers. His success encourage me so much. I feel it worth a try.

When Will it End?

On Wednesday June 13th a terrible accident occurred.

17 year old Elliott Harty lost his life in a motorcycle accident along the Barnett Highway. Although I never knew him personally, I am friends with many who knew him quite well. This tragedy really hits home for me as it could have easily been any of my dear friends. Alcohol and speed are said to be a factor which brings me to ask the question, “When will it end?” How many people, especially teenagers have to loose their lives before we step back and realize alcohol and driving combined equal a real and true danger. The number one cause of death for my age range (teenagers) is car crashes. If everyone who has been drinking took a second before driving, or getting a ride from someone who has, to think about what might happen maybe, just maybe a life will be saved. I am asking everyone to end this today. No more drinking and driving. No one is immune from the effects of alcohol. May the consequences of Elliott’s decision be a lesson to all.

R.I.P Elliott and to all who learned the hard way.
