Something New

Reading “Golden Boy, Emerald Girl” and discussing it is pretty new experience in my life. I seldom read, let alone a short story written by a Chinese American writer. I was totally admired at her after Brad introduced her; She earned a Master of Science in immunology at The University of Iowa but also is a writer, an editor and a teacher. She is just amazing. I personally like everything straightforward and clear without implying, and that’s usually not the case especially in stories, however, if everything is too easy to understand there won’t be lots of fun in reading and thinking. After reading “Gold Boy, Emerald Girl”, I am very curious and want to know if Professor Dai is a lesbian. We had a heated discussion in class. I found that traditional people don’t have the homosexual in mind so they don’t think that Siyu loves Professor Dai. A classmate mentioned that in Syria if people find out a person is homosexual, this person can be killed. I always like to know the various thought from different people and want to more all different situations that happen in the different countries. So I found this discussion was very interesting.

My classmates are memorable. They are very kind, nice, caring, and easygoing, full of sparkling ideas and interesting experience. I am always impressed by others’ work and presentations. They give me the courage to keep going because even at their age, they just keep studying, aiming at their goals step by step. I remembered during my presentation of the second poem, I just suddenly snapped; I just can’t help myself crying while reading my poem. Afterwards, Lillian gave me some tissue and Mariel comforted me with her poem in a rap style, which made me laugh with tears for a while. Later during the break, Uma gave me a hug and told me that everything's gonna be fine. It’s almost the end of this term, I just want to thank you, everyone, for being my classmates. I am so glad that I have such good classmates.

Something New
“Something new” has a different and a more profound meaning to me this semester. Although I am familiar with the Brad’s teaching (I have done English 11 in the past), with a bigger class size and much wider age gap, I was able to find many new things in this second year of learning. Through Brad’s great approach to teaching (very experienced and innovative), I learned the value of repetition. With the similar material and structure, I was able to comprehend questions better and absorb information more easily. It led me to look at the similar assignment styles under a new light; it also allowed me to gain more depth in understanding and have a better insight for discussions. Repetition is a very valuable learning skill because it helps me to find creativity. Sometimes I took a long time scratching my head to come up with new ideas for the same style of homework, especially the poetry writing, but after forcing myself to think differently from before, I was always able to come up with new and unexpected results. To look back my accomplishment, I must give credit to Brad for being such a great mentor to my English – studying journey

Something Memorable
This year left me some of the most memorable memories. Our class is a representation of multiculturalism in Canada. Presentations are the best platform for us to enjoy and share our classmates’ cultural diversity. The most unforgettable memory was the one student who sang his poems in Indian music instead of reciting them. The beautiful melodies and holy expressions were very impressive! They made the class much more interesting and entertaining. I certainly learned a part of his culture with his unique way of presenting poetry. My own most memorable presentation was when I went over the time limit for the presentation (I was a bit embarrassed after the reminder). From then, I learned how to organize my presentation time more efficiently and stay within the limit. The film “Temple Grandin” also left a great impact to my memory. It was a wonderful time, and it broadened my sight to a different perspective. I learned how to respect people who are different from us; the most important lesson I got is how to face hardships in life with confidence and courage. I am reluctant to leave now that the term has come to an end, but I believe that all the experience will be the valuable memory to my future.

Although English 12 was challenging subject for me, it passed pleasantly with many innovating and interesting workshops and projects through this semester. “The image presentation” was the most novel project that I have ever experienced before. Also, it was the most challenge assignment among many projects because it was not easy and simple at all to me. It demanded lots of time to think for summiting project mission (memorable community). Also we needed to take a snap photo which should convey a clear message about a memorable place for community. Through this project, I have learned many things: how to express and engage my thought to the public audience with only one snap shot image within limited time (2-3 mins max), how do I appreciate my community, and the power of communication(sharing). We dedicated a whole class for presenting our images to the class. Over 29 images were represented by their unique personal background and their community. Every student tried to attain the sublime images to relate with their mind, soul, and their communities. After this sharing time, we felt much intimacy and closeness to each other. This image presentation project gave us lots of meanings and valuable lesson.

Something Memorable
It is no exaggeration to say that every class and project in English 12 was memorable to me. Especially, the very last workshop and assignment of a Memoir was the most memorable project in this semester. When we studied memoir we received quality resources and had a good enough group discussions, I read three different examples of memoir – Patrick Lane’s “Looking for the Beauty in Life”, “The Thrush”, and Alice Munro’s “Spaceships Have Landed”—for our workshop from the class. Moreover, it was fun to share our memories of childhood’s play with group members. Everyone was enthused by his/her memorable memory to share. Also, I appreciate that I had chance to read Patrick Lane’s memoirs because I felt goose bumps while I was reading his work. Those quality examples of memoirs, imitation study, and lots of group discussions brought me a clear concept of the memoir. It was really helpful to understand and let me to write my own memoir smoothly. This workshop not only increased my knowledge, but also let allows me to have a deep appreciation of the memoir.

Something New
Sitting in a classroom with a large group of classmates and being a student again a dozen years after my last graduation ceremony wasn't just something new for me; it was fun and refreshing. In Brad's English 12 class, we weren't there to be spectators (and sat quietly to observe), we were participants and we anticipated a big part of this class: in group discussions, at presentations, and posting assignments on the blog. Before today, I would have never imagined myself falling in love with poetry; as a matter of fact, I found it to be the most confusing literary form and I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy it. Everything changed after the lesson of “Here I Am”. Not only did I have a chance to review my past (after being rusted for so many years), but I also learned how to express myself precisely and wonderfully through a poem. It was truly a blessing. Brad's unique way of teaching has not just opened my mind, it has helped me to greatly improve my writing skills as well as my ability to enjoy the beauty of the English language.

There are so many people that influenced and shaped who we are today: family, friends and teachers. I had no expectations, only worries, before I started this semester; Brad showed me how wrong I was nevertheless. The most wonderful and memorable thing in Brad's class wasn't just the brilliant crowd that surrounded me, it's Brad himself. Brad's teaching techniques are unique – not only did he teach us the technical stuff (such as punctuation, settings, and structures,) he also taught us how to enjoy English literature. The class itself was always encouraging and engaging. Brad truly delivered how he defines a teacher's duty like Socrates said “I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think,” and yes, he did make us think, really hard indeed. No words can describe how much I enjoyed group discussions and how much it helped me. The friendship that I gained and how much I learned from the others were beyond my expectation. The feelings of excitement and satisfaction after each class were amazing. For me, it wasn't just an English class, Brad's class is the most fun, engaging, inspiring and memorable class that will forever change how I see English literature.

I am a “professional” student—not only for a traditional meaning, but also for the curiosity I have. This motivation enables me to meet many teachers. Mr. Brad Hyde is a very unique teacher among them. In his class, he converted his monologue to a live stage play of nearly 30 students. What did his magic wand come from? It came from his respect to the profession, the efficient communication with his students, and the confidence of being teacher over 30 years. His power being a “drama” director, and his passion for teaching, stirred the class hot. He offered us various materials such as a poem, a lecture, a short story, a non-fiction film, or even a pantomime. The effect was invoked when we responded. Group discussion could continue during lunch time. Questions on one character’s life might be mentioned in another totally different scenario. We all are the screen writers. At last, we swept away the reserved action in the first presentation. My classmates on the stage laughed or sobbed, sang or rapped, cheered or sighed. The most timid girl acted like a drama star. I might not be the star student, but I must be the one to enjoy the excited and exhausted performance in Brad’s class.

My ten-year-old daughter one day said, “I should bake brownies for Brad.” I was surprised, “Why?” She answered that she wanted to thank the teacher who made her mom passionate to English study. She also felt joyful that she would have a potential peer to discuss many books she is fond of. Yes, I must be very crazy for Brad’s English class. Not only did I indulge to my reading and homework, but I also shared many of our class readings with my daughter. The discussion between us has become to part of our talk. Educator James Comer said, “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.” Our enhanced parent-child relationship is beneficial from my learning from Brad’s class. I found myself achieving in six areas this term. The most valuable part among them is how Brad extended the length of my thinking, and expanded the width of my view. He became a bridge to many different thoughts. By understanding these various thinking ways, I am more tolerant and forgiving now. It is a windfall to my life, and to my kids. We will make sure the brownies are available when teacher Brad retires.

Something New
In retrospect, lots of something new happened to me in my English 12 class. Learning to appreciate and write English poem, watching heartwarming movies during the class, listening to the emotional songs sung from the deep of heart by an adorable senior classmate, are just a few to name among all the news. The last time I sat in a formal classroom was a long time ago back to the years I was in university. My experience in this class, however, was like a brand new one, for I was not just studying new knowledge or skills, but also given unlimited opportunities to reflect on the meaning of life, to practise embracing the diversity of world, and to learn to find myself in solitude. Those are something I never learnt in my previous student life, yet they are undeniably important. When it is finally the time for the class to come to an end, I feel unwilling to leave. I am grateful to Mr. Brad for teaching me to care about humanity, and to everyone in the class for sharing your unique experience with me. They are something new, but also something that can be carried for a lifetime.

Something Memorable
At the thought of something memorable, the scene at the last group discussion on memoir review replays in my mind continuously. It turns to something truly unforgettable. Two young girls wrote about what happened in their lives (not many years ago) back in their homelands, the piece of land which they deeply love and dream to come back, but could not return because of wars. Those who started the brutal wars devastated their beautiful homes, ruined their lives and even caused the loss of their beloved one. Recalling the hard days, they couldn’t help bursting into tears. Meanwhile, their stories also evoked strong reactions from me. For the very first time, I felt the war was so close to me. As a lucky person being able to live a peaceful life till my age, I can’t imagine what exactly happened in another totally different world; what I know is they have born too much more than their tender shoulders can bear. However, the two young girls are unbeatable, as soon after, they wiped off their tears and smiled so bravely again. I wish them brilliant futures in this peace-loving new country. The memorable stories they left, will be a lasting reminder telling me that somewhere on this planet, many are still suffering from wars and longing for peace.

Something New

In Brad’s English 12 class, I experience a few new things, which are totally different from what I learned before. The most impressive one is that Brad let us analyze what is a good presentation from different views (one is as a presenter, and the other is as an audience). That helps me to clearly know and understand why a presentation is good or bad, and how to make it good. Another “new” is the group discussion. It is my first time having so many interesting group discussions in English class; these great discussions encourage me to rethink my opinion and get a lot of useful ideas in every topic. I remember when my group worked on the assignment of writing a memoir, everyone listened to others’ writings carefully, shared their opinions actively and gave their advice eagerly. We even couldn’t stop and continued discussing after class. Besides me, every classmate enjoys the Brad’s “new”; moreover, the most important thing is that I gain a great improvement in learning English from these “new”.

Something Memorable

There are many memorable happenings in the Brad’s English 12 class. Writing the same length of a paragraph as the poet Patrick Lane’s writing in his “The beauty in life” is the most impressive one to me. When I got this assignment, I felt pressured because I never wrote like that before and it seemed very difficult for me. After seriously thinking what had happened in my life, trying to choose the most suitable words and measuring the length of every sentence, I finally accomplished the “impossible mission”. This fulfillment taught me how to think, to consider and to describe something; it also brought me a great inspiration in writing English. Making presentations is another memorable experience in this class. Especially every student was requested to recite his/her own poem and present it in front of the class; it was a big challenge for me. Fortunately, I eventually overcame my fear and gained some confidence in public speaking. I really appreciate what Brad’s English class brings to me and it will stick deeply in my mind.

Something New
Our English 12 course, full of surprises and benefits, brings me a lot of new learning experiences, such as writing my first English poem by following samples, making an image presentation and watching a silent film of Charlie Chaplin. The most impressive part is reading the short story “Gold Boy, Emerald Girl” by Yiyun Li; it is my first time reading an English work by a Chinese American writer ( English is her second language). To a great degree, her writing experience inspires me to learn English as well as possible. Moreover, reading her other books promotes my understanding of how to “write good English” by using simple words and sentences, and this is exactly what William Zinsser has emphasized in his talk. Zinsser’s perspectives and Li’s success on writing have changed my opinion that writing is necessarily involved with complicated adjectives and decoration, which greatly strengthens my confidence in learning. I also like Brad’s recommendation about other outstanding writers and poets--Steven Millhauser, Patrick Lane and Wislawa Szymborska, whose unique works open a door to a new literary world to me, and this new world is so intriguing and informative that it is worthy of my ceaseless efforts in my life to explore.

Something Memorable
The image presentation on neighborhood and community is a memorable thing to me, for not only I have learned to keep a precious memory through combining a nice photo with a paragraph, but also I am impressed by the rich diversity of the understanding of community life due to different age, gender and culture. They showed their love to the environment around them from different aspects. I can still clearly remember Kylie described in her presentation how she and her neighbors gradually carried out a playground building plan through their efforts; her fluent oral English is quite admirable, too. And Harbhajan’s classic Indian “song” gave me a fresh feeling, expressing the deep love to his religion. I ever worried his definition of “community” might be off the topic. However, after watching three Indian classmates’ presentations with one accord, I seemly understood that’s the best “community” in their hearts. Sandy’s image about safety was surprisingly related with a huge elephant, only separated by a small pond from her neighborhood. What an excited community she lives in! All of the splendid diversity gives me a brand-new view of the wonderful world and enforces my love of life.

Something new
In English 12 class, with a unique teacher -Brad, most of things have been new for me. He teaches with a new, modern method and gives us a different experience of studying. The first thing that I feel new is that he is good at using various materials such as blogs, short stories and movies. Each material has different purposes. For instance, by using blogs, students can show their opinions on website. By reading short stories, brad focus on improving the student’s analysis ability. Meanwhile, by watching movies, he creates a very interesting surrounding for learning. His new mode of teaching stimulates us to have a strong interest in studying: therefore, our class are always full of positive energy. Another one is that he always lets us write first reaction and discuss in group. It helps us to understand different ideas. In group work, Brad tries to guide us to think more deeply than we learnt. It’s totally Brad’s teaching style – unique, interesting and innovative.

Something memorable
When I look back our course, there are two things impress on me deeply. The first one is to write poem and make a presentation to the whole class. Brad always gives us samples to make us understand how to do better. As a result, after doing “Here I Am” exercise, I feel more confident to write poem in future. By doing the presentation, Brad gives us many chances to build confidence in front of class. Until now, I can remember that my classmate said she exercised a hundred times for her presentation. The second memorable impression is group work. Due to our classmates have different background and culture, we share or argue our own opinions. The group work gives me the best chance to know the different culture. In Brad’s class, the group work is distinct because we need to write down other’s opinions in our writing assignment after we discuss our first reaction. All in all, the everything of class engraves in my mind. I cherish the happy time that we get along with each other.

Something memorable……
In this course, the most memorable and enjoyable experience was when we were composing poetry like “Here I am” and as we found out “life is the only way”. I had never written a poem in my mother tongue, till English 12.I have never thought I could do it, because poetry to me is mysterious and complicated. However, I finally accomplished my work in a surprisingly enjoyable manner. I am really surprised how such a short piece of writing could share so much content and emotions, but it really does. I saw everyone listen so enthusiastically .Also, everyone likes the way I read my poem; that was really valuable and memorable moment for me in this course. The tips for composing poetry evidently were very useful to all of us, because in the end, we sounded like a real poet. Thanks Brad for giving me such a unique experience. Moreover, during the course I gained self confidence to presenting in English in front of a large group. I will never forget this enjoyable experience; when everyone included my teacher (Brad) also likes my theme presentation about “Sari”. There is no doubt that this class has been very useful and enjoyable for me.

Something new and different………
In my English class, with an enthusiastic teacher like Brad, lots of things have been new for me. The class was quite different from the regular classes. I can mention new friends with varieties of different cultures, religions, and background, and a teacher with several innovated method to teach English. The “Blog” was also new thing me. It is an interesting tool to make bridges among student’s thoughts and create a web communication that everyone could participate in .The class was not a traditional course with a teacher who continued his monologue and the students only listen to him. I believe this method of education could potentially be a public education system and allow students to become more creative and independent thinkers. Furthermore, choosing a special photo as homework on the blog and presenting about the picture was very different and interesting for me. Through each picture I got lots of information about my classmates, different places, and ideas. Each presentation was unique and diverse just like the individuals and their personalities. Some photos attract me to find out more about them a good example would be “Punjab’s Golden Temple “.So, it proved that I could do something I never even thought of.

Something new
Learning English in Brad’s class was an amazing experience because I did not only have the opportunity to read some unique stories but also know some famous writers and appreciate some insightful poems and movies. For example, When Brad introduced us the one of most celebrated poets Patrick lane (actually, I had never heard of him before), I was touching by his speech of “Looking for a beauty in life”. It was a quite normal encounter that was about a dieing butterfly fell in his hand. Something similar might have happened to us before, and most of the times we might ignore it, but the setting and his personal experience, which Patrick added to his speech, made it different. His encounter changed his life and taught me to treasure the beauty in my lives. Another his memoir was also with a very simple plot and it could teach us a thoughtful meaning. I appreciate Brad introduce so many greater literary works, writers, movies to me and inspired me to further think about my life. (174 words)

Something memorable
My English 12 course will be finished soon, but the unforgettable memories will keep in my mind forever. I still remember how nervous I was when I present my first poem in front of my classmates, and Eunice, who sat in the first row, constantly nodded with approval to encourage me to continue my presentation. It was so touching when I saw the movie “Temple Grandian”, and the words that Dr Carlock told to Temple “The door will open a whole world for you. All you need to do is decide to go through it.” not only encouraged Temple but me. The happiest moment was in group discussion. When we discussed our childhood experiences, we were surprised that we had the similar child’s play despite we were from different country. The most memorable thing in mind is the comments that Brad wrote below my work. These pertinent and encouraging comments will stimulate me for further efforts. (156 words)

Something New
Taking the English 12 course was like hiking huge mountains for me. This course was a new challenge and turning point of my life. Brad was a new professional and respectable teacher whoever I had met, and every workshops, presentations, films, poems, classmates, even the group discussions were also new. Especially, an image presentation was the most new one to me. Even in Korea, I had never done before. To explain how much important a photo was in my community, thinking and looking the places or things were unusual way for studying English to me and I doubted how much helpful it was to learn English when I got the this one as homework. However, doing this project, I recognized that I totally forgot that I had to appreciate whatever I had, and for I had the numerous important things in my community, I could not choose one. I thought that what is important as an immigrant, and then I chose a personal things. When I saw my classmates’ presentation, all the presentations were meaningful and inspired me. An image presentation was the powerful new one in English 12 class!

Something Memorable
Through the English 12 course, I learned a lot of things through the various subjects: the films, poems, presentations, short stories, TED talks, and the group discussions. Every subjects were fresh and interesting for me, but especially, the best memorable one was the group discussion after reading William Zinsser's article, “Writing Good English.” Before the group discussion, we wrote our own idea about what is good writing, made a list of six rules for good writing, and shared the writing and six rules in the group. And then, we found the similarities and differences, made a group list, and presented in the class. Through this group work, I realized about my biased point of view and it made me to think widely, deeply, and variously. Moreover, it made me to overcome the fear about the English, try to listen carefully and actively to my classmates, and accept the different opinions. Therefore, I had the confidence of writing English more than before I took the English 12 course, thought another aspects of things, and didn’t hesitate to ask for reading classmates’ writing for improvement.

Something New

Brad class has helped me improve my writing, build new skills, expand my knowledge, and has boosted my confident. Some of the new things I had to experience are posting on a blog, making a presentation and group discussion which helped me know my class mates’ opinions on each topic. Group discussion allowed me to express myself more on the topics than when I wrote because I was not able to explain myself in writing. Also, it gives us chance to really learn from each other about topics that I was not able to understand on my own. For example ("Golden girl Emerald boy" was difficult to understand but with group discussion I was able to understand what it was about) and hear my classmates view since our class was blessedly diverse with different culture our opinion and the way we handled situations were different. Moreover, making presentations was nerve racking but, I have got better at it. One of my biggest lessons was to calm my nerves if I want to improve my presentation, practice multiple times and to always do my best. I learned to know what to include by managing my time usefully. I remember my first day of class reading about the formal class feedback about on the blog “Somethings new; Something memorable ". Here I am reminiscing about the great experience I had in English 12 class. I had lots of memorable things in Mr. Brad’s class from watching short film and movies, writing poem and reading a memoir. Watching "Temple Grandin’s” was very inspiring and motivating I needed it because it taught me that you can be "different but, not less" . Also, the silent film "City Lights” delivered a beautiful message of acts of kindness even without the words. This shows action speaks louder than words. In addition writing my second poem was a great challenge. I spent so much time asking people’s opinion by completing the sentence the first topic “life is the only way to..." That didn't help at all. No one has clues about life. I took the time to write my poem and I was happy with the outcome. Finally, reading my memoir to my group made me very emotional but they were very supportive. All the work made me realize that l can do anything in the world if I put my mind in it and invest time into it. Regardless of what the outcome may be I have learned so much. Something New
Brad’s class was an interesting and challenging chapter in my learning journey. Writing my first poem in English, “Here I am,” was hard. With both group and class discussions made my first piece possible—I got lost during the process. The first presentation in front of my new classmates was a nerve wracking experience; however, it was enjoyable to hear the poems of others which allowed us to get to know each other more. As each person presented their poem, we realized that all of us were going through the same stress. In fact, this shared experience caused us to naturally support each other with our friendly encouraging faces and loud applause. I found it was interesting that one of the principles of good writing is to “keep it simple”, William Zinsser, by using words that are easy to understand but not boring and learn how to write “by imitating” others and “integrating” to our own style. I found many gems of knowledge in Brad’s class that will lead me to my next chapter of learning.

Something Memorable
I had a wonderful time in Brad’s class. Group discussions helped us get to know each other better and created the comfortable learning environment. We had a good laugh when we shared interesting stories—sometimes out of topic. When we shared some heartbreaking stories, we tried to cheer each other up. My favourite class discussion was the relationship between Professor Dai and Siyu (Golden Boy, Emerald Girl) that revealed an unexpected truth—they were lesbian—that brought out a long conversation after the class that day. I learned many interesting facts and heard unbelievable stories about different challenges that people face, which I had never thought possible. It was an eye opener for me to learn what had happen to my classmates in other parts of our world. Even though we are from different backgrounds, we have the same desire: to improve ourselves, respect others and support each other. I am so glad to be part of this memorable class.

Something New

English 12 was different, and it was full of surprise. The most vital necessity for attracting students to experience new things was group discussion. It was an innovation rather than a difference. At the first, when we start English 12, I thought it would be the same as we did in English 11, but Brad brought a change in the teaching method-instead of what we did on English 11. He let us listen to each other-which I think it was quite useful. This new way of teaching made us to put our heads together to get a better result. It also helped us to know each other and it made our group discussions full of fun. Writing and presenting our own poem created a sense of surprise in us. I really enjoyed experiencing poetry. It was a great opportunity to find our weaknesses, and to know how to perform in public. I enjoyed every moment of English 12 class.

Something Memorable

Every moment of my English 12 was memorable, but the most memorable part for me was the group discussion. Every day Brad came up with a new topic to make us circle around a table and share our thoughts. In this class he never put Eunice and I in the same group, which was hard for me to talk to someone that I have never seen before and share your idea. Slowly, I get to know all students and this circumstance led me to a world of humor and inspiration. The unforgettable writing was our memoir and everyone was happy with his or her memorable moment in-group discussion. After long time Patrick Lane’s “Looking for the beauty in life” let me think about my past, which make me happy. Our memoir was great experiencing at all, and it ended up putting a smile on everyone’s face. I will always miss this class for everything especially those warm and friendly group discussions.

“Something New”

Poems, presentations, punctuations, paragraphs, and personal reactions are most of the things to look forward to this English 12 class. I am extremely totally aware of that; however, I was not expecting that I would experience more interesting stuff in Brad’s class. Poems are not new to me; in fact, I made one free verse and memorized a sonnet. The only difference is that I never thought of presenting my own poem to others, yet I did in this class. I gained so much information and knowledge from this class. I feel very happy that I get chance to know Temple Grandin’s story. I must say that her story motivates and inspires me on a daily basis. I never felt so positive and confident facing every opportunity that is out there. It’s also fun to know more about personalities like Leonard Cohen, Patrick Lane, and Charlie Chaplin. To be honest, I feel a little smarter learning about these talented artists and I feel very excited for the students next semester. Aside from this, I totally enjoyed reading the short stories, watching short films, writing personal reactions, and engaging in-group discussions. I learned new interesting stories and opinions from my classmates, which are very helpful in strengthening my wisdom.

“Something Memorable”

Starting from day one up until the last day in this class would me memorable for me. I must admit that I have a bittersweet (love and hate) relationship with this English 12 class alone. I have troubles to the fact that we had to do so much work and whatnot; however, I love it when it pays off and we’ll be grouped in class and discuss our work with one another. I get excited and eager about this because I get to have a chance to share my ideas and listen to my classmate’s opinions too. One memorable group discussion was sharing our written “Memoir” and opinions about short stories like “Gold Boy, Emerald Girl” and “ Writing Good English” with each other. Hearing my classmate’s work made me realize that there are similarities between our cultures, which I didn’t expect. I find this very informative and helpful, and if it weren’t for Brad’s teaching style, I might not be able to learn this kind of stuff. Aside from the unforgettable knowledge I received, this class gave me the opportunity to have new set of friends. This class will truly be special and memorable for me for it exceeded all my expectations.

The feeling you get when you walk in a class that is absolutely full and most of them are years older than you. My sister warned me and said that I will feel older than my age when studying with them. In Syria, this would never happen and I never expected to study with people who have years of experience more than I do. To set with someone who once was a teacher, or finished their university degree and learns from them was such an honor. Also been able to share opinions with them and knowing they are listening made a huge difference. No matter how different it was to study with this student, however, Writing and talking about my country was a whole new experience. I felt so nervous and emotional to write about the tragedy Syria is going through, but whenever I share with the student I felt proud. Brad gave us big opportunity to share with others in a safe environment. Just know that everything new is worth risking and never give up even if you don't feel comfortable in the beginning after that trust me it will be different and you will love every moment you spend with the class just like we did.

Something Memorable

the best thing about memories is making them. In English 12 class every day we spent together will never be forgotten. we worked as a group most of the time and I know it sounds irritating but honestly, you will thank the teacher afterward. The class felt like home, and every student was part of the family. All conversations and arguing about an assignment, culture or anything we had, made a huge mark in our heart and mind. Furthermore, the most memorable assignment was writing the poem "A Note" were I was able to write about my country and the tragedy they have been through. No matter how hard it looked in the beginning yet when I finished it I couldn't wait to read it to the class. I read every word with comfort and it felt so safe to share with everyone my pain, my people's pain. Also, I loved everyone's poem and every time I heard someone's I would say "oh this is the best" but really they all did such an amazing job and I enjoyed hearing every word from the students.

Something New
This term is a milestone for me. I have learned to imitate to write a poem and a memoir, and it makes my work easier and better. When I wrote my first poem "Here I Am", I ruined my poem because I didn't understand to use the example structure. After discussing with my classmate, they helped to recognize my mistakes and solve my problems. I had done my first English poem; it made me feel happy as giving birth of my first kid. Also it makes me be willing write more poems and experience the language's beauty. "Writing Good English" by William Zinsser provides me clear guides to write with simplicity, clarity and brevity. He considers one thought pre sentence and using simple tools; it truly helps me avoid writing run-on sentences and improve my writing skill. It becomes my GPS to remind me the right direction in writing and makes my writing have a new look. These are my new experience in this term. (169 words)

Something Memorable
Presentations always make me nervous, but it has different experience this term. I learned about the tips of presentation, and I realized what I need to improve and what I can do before my presentations. Even my first try was terrible; I didn't give up trying. Also my classmates gave me lots of warm eye contacts, interesting and feedback; it helped me to conquer my nervous and have more confidence to stand in front of my classmates. It is a big step for me. Finding a poem to share with my classmates is my first time experience. I didn't like to read poems very much. This time, I had to read many poems in a few days and chose one to show. I was getting to get the theme of each poem and had a wonderful moment to enjoy reading again. Patrick Lane's writing and writing a memoir gave me more joy to experience the art of language. Language isn't only communication, it also a way to know yourself and express your thoughts to other people. This is term, Brad's class isn't only learning testing skill, and it gives me vivid memory of English. (190 words)

“Something new”

Thinking over the whole semester, I have realized that many activities challenged
and prompted me into a thoughtful journey. Every single day of class has been
filled with new material and thoughtful provoking techniques to improve our
skills. During this semester, when Brad (teacher) declared to write a poem, I felt
frustrated, and choose to give up because honestly, I do not even enjoy poetry.
However, his new technique about giving us a sample first inspired me to write
“Here I am” and “A Note” poems. It gave me outlet for my changing identity. It
was my first time that I wrote poems in English and received good marks. Next,
bloggings was totally new for me. At the beginning, I wasn’t comfortable posting
my work on a blog, but later on, I realized that it’s a good idea to share my writing
with other students. In addition, writing a memoir in 611 words was an amazing
experience. I got a chance to write an unforgotten experience of my life for the
first time. I am really appreciated of Brad because his insightful teaching style that
encouraged me to be not afraid from “Something New”. Just go through it!

“Something Memorable”

There have been many memorable things during English 12 class. First of all, going
every day to class was the most memorable part for me because each day
surprised me with different kinds of discussion, new topics and material. The
most memorable moment when I did not get good marks in literary term (e.g.
setting, conflict and character). In fact, I was a bit upset with my poor result, so, I
decided to work harder. Another memorable moment was the presentation. I
presented two poems and an image in front of the class. Surprisingly, all
presentations were well done. These presentations gave me more confidence to
present any of my work in public. I got to master most of this skill through this
class. Also, during a “A Note” poem presentation, one of the students in this class
sang the poem in front of us and everybody enjoyed that moment. Moreover,
watching “Temple Grandin” was a wonderful and inspiring experience. It
encouraged me to not to give up, and it motivated me to work hard and achieve
my dreams. This semester was full of worthwhile memories of gaining discipline,
persistence, and confidence that I will never forget.

Something new

Taking Brad’s English 12 class, I had a great opportunity to experience a new type of teaching style. Since I went to school where most teaching methods were teacher-centered, to be honest, I expected Brad’s class to follow the same model. So one can imagine how surprised I was to discover that in Brad’s class my classmates and I were leading the class! After completing my first piece of writing, I began to realize how much time and effort Brad puts into carefully designing his lessons and assignments. I was impressed by how the poems, analyses, and short-stories we wrote inspired us to construct and share our own unique thoughts on life. For the first time, in a long time, I was experiencing the magical power writing has to make one deeply. However, I have to admit that this was a tremendously painful process, though, most certainly worth it! Through group discussion, I had the special opportunity to exchange my ideas with classmates from various ethnic backgrounds. This gave me a good venue to find my own voice in what I believe is important. Perhaps this is the best part of Brad’s teaching style; he sets us up, and then gets out of the way so we can do the learning. -211 words

Something memorable

Imitating Patrick Lane’s first paragraph was definitely my most memorable experience in this class. I found it challenging to write “looking for the beauty in life” using my own story and the same sentence structure of a famous writer. At first, I was worried about how awkward my story would become by squeezing my simple words into a more sophisticated writer’s form. However, after countless edits, I started to realize why people who aspire to be good writers imitate well-known writer’s stories. Carefully examining the original, I could see how each sentence was masterfully connected to the other. Ironically, by studying another’s voice, I could discover my own. Of course, I could not exceed the quality of the original but its structure enabled me to write my own story about the beauty in my life. I feel proud of my new creation and more confident in my journey as a developing writer. 152 words

SOMETHING NEW
At times certain things may seem intimidating at a far distant but once you try, they become doable despite the obstacles. Brad’s teaching techniques are very distinct. The first day of class I was puzzled when he mention to us that we were expected to present ‘Here I Am’ poem in front of the class. It was absolutely a new level of experience that I conquered. Group discuss after reading an article or watching movie really helped us share our opinions. The fact, the class is diversified makes it interesting to learn about different culture. I can remember Maple mentioning about, it’s okay for girls to hold hands in her country, whereas in North America people judge it differently. Zinsser'
article about, “Writing Good English” enabled me to realize that good English should be simple and has clarity in it. I had always thought to write good English a person has to use those big words. I realized I was wrong after reading the interesting Zinsser’s article about good English. I will use the new knowledge I have acquired in Brads class to better my English even In future.

SOMETHING MEMORABLE
The presentation about the image that represents a community cannot easily fade away. I can easily recall all the presentation that was done. The two Golden Holy Temple are ineradicable, in fact they are rooted inside my mind .It was fascinating to learn about the different culture. I absolutely enjoyed listening to all the presentation, very informative and interesting.. I was amazed when Kylie mentioned the effort and energy that it took as parent’s .Fighting for the right of their kids to secure a play park at school. It was awe-inspiring .That is the act of giving back to the community. However, . I was moved by the short film “The Man Who Planted Trees”. The story made me to question myself, in what ways do i help my community? And what legacy will I leave behind? I am so thrilled to be part of English 12 class. I will surely miss the group discussion that was always surrounded by well experienced and opinionated people. I never liked group discussion before ,It actually changed when I realized the group work enabled me to believe in my work. It was not for my fellow classmate and Brad, I couldn’t have made it this far.

Something New

Something that was entirely new for me was the idea that “simple is good.” This was so strange to me, I was always under the impression that I had to prove my intelligence through fancy wordplay. As Zinsser says “Don’t try to find a noun that you think sounds more impressive or “literary.” In reality would write a whole lot, but in reality say very little. I try to use Zinsser’s rule, but take it with a grain of salt. It took me a lot of tries and even more patience to start to understand what Zinsser was talking about.I lost touch with who I am through through the way I was writing. With Brad’s help I was able to ignite the emotional connection in my writing. This was the most valuable lesson I learned and something I will try to carry with me in my future writing endeavors.

Something Memorable

There were quite a few unforgettable moments this year in English twelve. My favourit memory was listening to the different versions of the poem “Life is the only way.” It was an emotional experience getting up in front of the class and getting vulnerable. It helped me that their were other students who also shared about losing a loved one. I felt connected to the class, and didn’t feel awkward having shared something personal. In particular Nancy’s poem about losing her brother really made me feel like I wasn’t the only one who shared about something extremely close to my heart. I loved experiencing the wide range of culture in the classroom. I learned a lot about asian, middle-eastern and African culture. Something that stuck with me was that we all come from different walks of life, but we share similar experiences. In addition, Brad showed me that I can enjoy poetry, and that there are so many different types of poems. These are things that are truly amazing and memorable.

Something New

The journey of English 12 class at PALC is totally a new and interesting experience in my life. Mr. Brad’s teaching method is so effective and unique that it creates a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the class. To paste your homework on English 12 blog is also a new experience for me in this class. It makes the students more responsible and cautious because it is under the surveillance of many eyes. Moreover you can also learn much more from other’s homework from the blog. Image and poem presentation has boosted my morale very much. Writing an English poem and memoir, though a hard and challenging task, encouraged me to express my heart’s elation on paper. Group discussions in small groups were a new experience for me and these were very helpful to bring more clarity about the subject matter. Moreover, the four rules of Clarity, Simplicity, Brevity and Humanity given in Zinsser’s article “Writing Good English” has cleared many of my false thoughts and has put me on the right track to learn, read and write more and more English literature. This is possible only if you have a great mentor like Mr. Brad with you.

Something Memorable
Every moment of English 12 class at PALC in this semester has become memorable and a source of inspiration to me forever. This class represents unity in diversity, because students come from different cultures and countries. In group discussions, I was not only able to know about their very interesting customs but also about the hard times through which some of them are passing in their countries due to political turmoil. To sing a self-written poem at the class and then to sing John Denver’s song “Country Roads, Take me Home” at the Christmas party has become precious moments of my life. This has boosted my morale to prepare more English songs. (I have prepared one more song “At the Cross, I Bow my knees” -Hillsong). I thank Mr. Brad and Ms Louise for their guidance and my friend Mr. Inderjit for his motivation. To watch an incredible movie “Temple Grandin” about an incredible person are memorable moments in the class. Further the silent movie “City Lights” which is an indelible masterwork of cinema will remain fresh in my memories always.

Something New
English 12 was a new and exciting course for me because I learned new skills and made new friends. “Writing Good English” by William Zinsser was the most beneficial article that I have ever read in this course. Zinsser opened my eyes to the world of “Writing Good English.” Previously, I thought people who use plain language in their writings are not professional writers. I was actually worried about my writing because I believe that am a simple writer. Zinsser made me realize that, “Simple is good,” as he stated in his article. In fact, Mr. Zinsser made me feel confident about my writing. Moreover, I made friends in my English 12 class that was the best thing that had ever happened to me in this semester. English 12 class made me to believe in myself and hopefully this will help achieve a better future.

Something Memorable
There are several memorable scenes in our English 12 class that I remember the most. These include our group discussions and the movie “Temple Grandin”. Our group discussions always occurred in a friendly environment which made us very comfortable. These discussions were absolutely interesting because there were different people from different cultures, beliefs and ideas. We all contributed comments and received comments about our assignments but with lots of respect towards each other’s points of view. Moreover, I found the “Temple Grandin” film very engaging. It truly astonished me by its incredible theme. The “Temple Grandin” film taught us the world needs different kinds of minds to work together and to have better future. Thanks to my teacher and classmates who made for me such unforgettable moments. I will always remember this entire experience.

Something New
This class was a great experience; I have heard some of my friends went to college without taking English 12. They went on with communications. However, most of them are coming back to get their English done. I am very happy to end this course with the mark I needed. At the beginning of the semester, Brad’s works were almost the same as his English 11 but the marking was very much harder than what I thought. I have learned so much from poems to paragraphs, usage of colons, semicolons and most importantly to keep my writing simple (be myself). Also, Patrick Lane “Looking for the Beauty in Life” was the best experience in Brad’s class and it was something new; it was an amazing way to learn and find the beauties in my life through his wonderful life story. I always hated getting papers from teacher. It was always confusing for me, but now I actually love this way of doing my work and learning, because Brad explains all his work sheets before handing them out. This class was full of memorable moments; almost each one of Brad’s assignments was challenging. In addition, I “loved-hated” the last project we had to do “memoir” because it was the hardest work in English 12. However, I loved it when it was done; it was one of the best memorable works in Brad’s class. It was very amazing to see all the different background students do the same work. I also, looked forward to reading those who shared their memoirs online. Also, the “Here I Am” project is unforgettable; it made me think through my life: past, future, and now (who am I).It is really wonderful to have older classmates than my age; they were really helpful and more experienced with most of Brad’s works. This class and the beautiful movies we have watched will always remain in my mind. I will always remember Brad’s voice and intelligent teaching style through my life and hopefully I will see my friendly classmates again_163 WORDS

Something New

Doing the English 12 class was very interesting, motivating and filling with surprises experience. Everyday teacher (Brad) gave us “something New” to learn. Firstly, doing the poetry assignment (in the starting of class) was very fresh experience. From my first poem “Here I Am”, I learned how to describe myself (past, present and future) in a short poem. But, presenting a poem in front of my class was very bad experience; however, it increased my confidence to speak in public. Moreover, watching the movies “Temple Grandin” and “City Lights” was very loving and knowledgeable. Because of these movies, my thought about English movies are changed. I always thought that English movies are filled with sexual and fighting things. But from these two movies, I got knowledge about power of visualization (Temple Grandin) and power of love (in City Lights). In other words, my English 12 class was very exciting, entertaining and heart touching; also, the way of teaching was very loving just like family discussion.

Something Memorable

There have been so many memorable assignments during my English 12 class. Honestly, my teacher (Brad) and my classmates make it memorable. The most memorable assignment for me was “Image Presentation”. From that presentation, I learned about different cultures, their priorities, and religious. The image of “Golden Temple” was very familiar in my community. But, I didn’t know so much about it history. Also, I liked one of my classmate sang a line from our holy book (Awal Allaha Noor Upayea…..). Moreover, I liked Mariel,s image of different variety of food. This picture gave me or us an advice that if all the cultures joint together then the results will be delicious. Also, Eunice image about her backyard touched my heart. How a little girl got twenty-four people together on her(girl’s) birthday? I realized a child can build a strong relationship in community because people were shy in beginning. It is fact. In conclusion, the image presentation gave me a lot of memories and inspiration for future: flow of language, how to use gestures, and time bonding.

Something New
English 12 is absolutely hard work for me. Many things what I contact are really new also. When I sat in the class first time, I found Mr. Hyde’s speaking speed was faster than Peasron’s other teachers. At the first stage, I could not know his meaning at all. I feel so pressure on the huge change. Yet, appropriate pressure is necessary and it make me stronger. Now, I can understand his intention and distinguish many complicated words. Another new situation is that I have to type the keyboard to do my homework. I never accustomed to type English before and it influence my thinking very much. I had to face the challenge of doing homework. Now, I can type my homework easier and quickly. Mr. Hyde also like to exchange the pattern in different classes. He encourage us to express ourselves. Although I am shy, I have chance to represent in front of my classmates. Thanks to the tough training, these lift my English level rapidly. At the end of the semester, I feel truly upgrade comparing with one year before. As a student of Mr. Hyde, I am so lucky.

Time passed so fast. I have studied in Mr. Hyde’s class almost one year, and I will finish English 12 this January. It is uneasy job for me , especially I often see many friends show their comfortable lives in My-chat(one of mobile social media). Sometime when I was typing the essay in the Office Window, one of my friends post a delicious food photograph to me in other window of my computer. It pops up and distracts my thinking immedately. More than one time, I asked myself why I choice this lifestyle, inspite I insist on the hard job of improving my English level. Luckly, my classmates accompany me. We get together from different countries and with different age. We share the happiness and the kindness. We discuss the touching film excitedly. While someone express the missing feeling of homeland, we tear together; while someone sings the poem affectionately, we smile together. My teacher, Mr. Hyde, has already accompanied many students similar to me more than thirty years. I know, in the future some day, some memorable scene might occasionally jumps out from my mind; it should be in the class of English 12.

Something New

While it is certainly nice to be popular, the class number close to 40 that started this term was only the second one that big in my long career. Somehow, we settled back to around 30 students, a “magic” number that seems to work very well in a classroom that requires lots of interaction in small groups. Of course, at the beginning, I had no idea of who would “stick” and who would not; thanks to everyone who stayed and also endured the chaotic early days when we all barely fit into the classroom! It is especially heartening that you stuck it out when I had a short holiday week early on in the semester. Because my style is unique, it can take time for a student to feel truly comfortable. I ask that you do something different than you’ve experienced in the past and rely on you to study in a way that allows all of us to do the best we can. Next term, I expect similar numbers so, for those of you new students reading this in February, remember that the student comments above reflect the results of all that uncertainty!—194 words

Something Memorable

It was memorable this term that other teachers commented on your work done for me, especially on this assignment. We are often fairly isolated in our classrooms, we teachers, and don’t always have time to recognize the efforts of our fellows. Because of the unique nature of our centre, with a lab that provides an opportunity for students to write a draft and have another teacher read and advise them on their work, we are able to see for ourselves what is happening in other classrooms. Your heartfelt words of appreciation for this course and for me as a teacher resonated with others who were privileged to read them. Others were touched by your thoughts—for that I thank you and will always remember your kindness to me in my final year as a teacher at the Pearson ALC.—139 words
