Something New

I would like to mention two things I have never experienced before English 12 class. At first, I want to distinguish the article “Writing Good English” by William Zinsser. Mr.Brad presented this paper at the beginning of this class. It was very useful and interesting (and new) for me because I had absolutely contrary opinion about “good writing”. Four principles by William Zinsser - “Clarity, Simplicity, Brevity, and Humanity” - helped me to understand the mentality of English language. In the future I will try to follow his advises for making my English understandable and pleasant for English natives, and I hope it will help me to “fall in love” with “plain” and “strong” Beauty of English language. The second new thing for me was a writing poetries (“Here I Am” and “A Note”) in non-rhymed style. I had the hard opinion before that good poetry should be done in rhymed format only. I have never considered me as a Poet; nevertheless I was satisfied by my version of “A Note”. I understood you should not be narrow mind about poetry; it is a deep and diversity world. So if you want to enlarge your horizons, learn to use the language creatively and in appropriate way I recommend trying Mr.Brad’s class.

Something Memorable

Speaking about something memorable I would like to refer to two video actions: RSA lectures and silent movies (“Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” and “The Kid”). The second ones were the most enjoyable and memorable moments in our terms. I am grateful for the opportunity to know the world of Silent Movie. The brilliant work of actors and directors helped me to feel the same emotions as the main characters. They were the greatest masters of silence film and knew how to make audience laugh and cry. The RSA Lectures (and Unit test based on one of them!) also become the most memorable but the hardest moment for me. Idea to illustrate the topic as a cartoon on the screen impressed me a lot! Although it was very difficult for me to understand words due to very high speed of speaking and required all my possibilities in listening, I had a great and memorable experience. All of this allowed me to enrich my language skills enjoying the process of studying. Thanks for teaching and enjoying; I found more than I expected!

No textbook brings something new in my English 12 study. At the first school day, my teacher Brad said, "No textbook purchase is necessary." Since my successful learning experience was previewing the text before class and reviewing the text after class, I went library and borrowed a thick textbook The Key-English 12. Nevertheless, two weeks later, I started to change my mind although I still kept previewing and reviewing. Instead of the thick textbook, I found that Brad's example paragraphs are more effective. Brad's examples make me to hold the key quickly and accurately. I believe that writing is learned by imitation, just as Chinese like to say: "天下文章一大抄." I need a model, Brad's article is my writing model. Study Brad's examples detailedly; underline the literary devices; work hard to figure out why Brad choose his words; try to ponder over how Brad put his sentences together. Those are how I learned to write reactions to Film, Poetry and Short Story. And most importantly for me are Brad's examples teaching me how to express myself better in my writings. My classmates and I talk about our large improvements, "Brad pushes us up." My writing models -- Brad's articles -- help me own an extraordinary textbook which carries something new, and leads me to the destination of my English 12 study.

Something Memorable

Learning together with young classmates in my middle age is always something memorable. Foremost for me is a memorable group discussion on persuasion. Our teacher, Brad, asked us to choose persuasive RSA Animates. The interesting group discussion included two parts: partner work and group work. As a pair, I discussed with one classmate first, and then we joined with two other classmates. After group discussing, we decided our group's best choice, my animate "The Power of Quiet," for our class to watch. As expected, when Brad talked about "two Steves (Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) created Apple," the reactions of my young classmates, which are thoughtful and surprising, reminded me of myself as a teenager. Moreover, studying with my young classmates, who are similar ages to my son, I would like to show my serious attitudes. Through my two successful presentations, I just want to show an attitude to my young classmates: today -- studying at school -- you present your poems; tomorrow -- graduated from school -- you will present your job interviews or promotions. Success is primarily from attitude! Are you persuaded? my young classmates, go! Thank you guys for giving me a memorable experience.

Something New

In this semester, it was a challenge for me to choose English 12, for I was not good at writing. However, I found something new to attract me to complete this course. I thought all of the knowledge taught in class was a logical system. Brad asked us to present the poem “Here I Am” at the beginning of the semester. I believed it was a new experience for many classmates, and they appeared to be nervous a bit during their presentations. After a whole semester studying, most of us had a better presentation when we finished the poem “A Note.” Brad improved our confidence successfully with his step by step method. On the other hand, what we learned in class was linked to our assignments and tests, like group discussion, videos, and movies. I had to focus on everything mentioned because of this new teaching method, but I liked this feeling. Meanwhile, Brad used new articles and lectures as our studying materials. For example, he selected the articles published in “The New Yorker” in the recent years, and he played some lectures presented from TED and RSA. These innovative ways helped me to develop my curiosity and interest about this course. As a student, I appreciated that Brad gave me these new inspirations that included his effort and intelligence.

Something memorable

I had something special remained in my memory when I approached to end up my English 12 course. The style of Brad’s teaching gave me a deep impression. His speed of speaking was fast, but he could control the rhythm to make me catch up with him. Also, he was good at mixing different information into one topic to inspire my imagination. This method expanded my field of view and led me to think actively. Moreover, I memorized some studying materials such as the silent movie, “Sunrise.” I ever doubted if I was wasting time before I started to watch it. Nowadays these brilliant performances had become a part of my memory. Other sources (TED, RSA, and The New Yorker) also became my favorite because of Brad’s reference. Another memorable thing was sad that we missed several classes because of the teachers’ rotating strike. I regretted that I couldn’t continue my journey to learn more from Brad. However, I fortunately met many nice classmates, and we shared ideas in group discussion. The most memorable thing was that Brad told us he was thinking about his retirement. A proverb presented my mood: “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.” I hoped Brad would enjoy his remaining time as a teacher and have a pleasant retired life.

This message is for whom it may concern for the future English class of Mr. Brad Hyde. Hope this message goes into knowing that not everything is what is expected to be. It can be either be overwhelmingly good or the complete opposite. So, here is my experience during my stay in the spring semester of 2014.

SOMETHING MEMORABLE
Before I jump into my experiences, I need to let one know what my teacher, Brad, told us: we shouldn’t be repetitive in writing “Something New; Something Memorable”. So, one of my memorable experiences with this class was during the first day when I had ventured into the room, the teacher had a cartoon set up on the white board. In groups of four, we tried to decipher what the picture meant, resulting with two theories: First, cell phones are helping blind people navigate through the streets. Second, people who use cell phones need a blind’s cane to know their surroundings since they aren't focused on what going around them. Another example of my experiences is watching “Wall-e” as a silent film to learn that we can learn a lot without words only the sight. Furthermore, it was a great experience knowing the fictional character Rezak from reading “A Spoiled Man” as well as watching the RS Animate (even though it is difficult to understand the first time). As for producing poetry, it is just like writing except for the syllable count. Those experiences were wonderful.

SOMETHING NEW
As for writing about something new, every day the class was split up into groups or pairs so that each person was supposed to be grouped or paired with everyone by the end of the semester. I felt as though I have got to know two people whom I was paired with, very well and other people whom I don’t know much about except for their names. Another thing that was new was this blog and I didn't like it at first but then I got accustomed to it. In overall, at times the course was boring and at others, it was fascinating. I would leave you to observe, participate and enjoy this upcoming class. Have a good adventure and good luck!

Something New

At the start of English 12 I was scared. I did not know what to expect. We presented poems at the beginning and the end of the course. When I compare my presentations I see an abyss. First one was a horror; I was shaking as always before something new. ‘What would the others think about me?’ I thought. The second time I stood before the class without fear, relaxed even. I got the highest mark. I guess the semester has changed me. Working in groups was not my cup of coffee at first, but then I started to enjoy it. Moreover, imagining me as a poet was pretty unusual, as I prefer to write prose. It was not that hard, words came out almost by themselves. I just had to open up my heart and listen. Now I wish the course lasted a bit longer, so I could learn new things. Just do not be afraid.

Something Memorable

As I look back at the course, I see some memorable moments. Writing the narrative essay was a tough job. Usually I have a problem with the lower word limit, but this time I had been worried to not write too much. I had to plan and do it in parts. I think I would not write it in one evening as I use to. Even if I did, it would not end up so well. Several weeks before that, watching the TED video about storytelling was very important for me. I learned a few valuable lessons for someone who wants to be a storyteller. It made me think about my own characters (especially about their spine), and my own stories, as well as that assignment. Work with the short stories was not easy for me, but I managed. So, I earned some wonderful experiences that I will not forget. Keep holding on!

Something New
It had been a really long time since I stepped foot into a class room, and my feelings were mixed to say the least. I had no idea what I was walking into, but I quickly realized I was walking into something new and wonderfully different. I have never come across a teacher with this kind of teaching method. (No textbook required.) Group work was also pretty much a foreign concept for me as well. I can see why it was part of Brad's class. It gives people a chance to hear others point of view. Creating thought provoking dialogue, and getting classmates more comfortable with one another. The blog was something completely different for me as well. I had never blogged before, nor did I get a chance to read other students work. I enjoyed reading their work, not only to get another perspective, but to see if I had done my homework correctly. I was pleasantly surprised with every new teaching method Brad introduced, and I think you will too.

Something Memorable
The unique assignments Brad gives to the class really stands out as something I won't forget any time soon. They make you think, and they are not widley known, so therefore it makes you use your own brain-instead of looking for an opinion online. One thing very much enjoyed was being introduced to the world of silent film. The movie was called "Sunrise: A Tale of Two Humans." It was amazing that I could enjoy a movie without dialogue, (hard to believe, I know.) Brad also showed the first part of "Wall-e" and it was so good that I went home to watch the whole thing and now it is one of my favorite movies. The poetry unit at the beginning and end of the term was exellent. I have always loved writing poems, but I thought for it to be a good poem it had to rhyme- I was very wrong. The structured poems Brad assigned gave me a deeper understanding of how versitile poetry can be. Presenting however can be quite nervewracking, I did not want to go the route of picturing my classmates in their underwear. Due to the fact I would be spending a better part of four months with them. (Akward.) I enjoyed every new and memorable thing in Brad's class and I think you will too.

Dear friend,

Welcome to Brad’s class, you have the honour to become one of his latest students to attend his lessons. I’m going to share with you my suitcase’s content: new collectables and memories from my past four months’ journey.

Those postcards represent the varieties of classmates I worked with in groups. The challenge was to compare and share perspectives from the same assignment. This trophy I got with a narrative essay (1000 words) -- it was my biggest achievement in English composition. This, instead, is a Rubik’s cube. It symbolizes my mind and how I was able to learn to organize and categorize my thoughts. (The most useful exercise was to write a comment in just 20 minutes). Here is a recipe book: “How to Write Simply but with Flavour”. And this is a scrap paper with a series of counted syllables and rhymes written; I used it to compose poems, a daunting task for all of us. I also found a short video clip with performances of our poetry presentations – a mix of laughter and tears – my best time with my classmates. And this is the kit for “A Presentation in Front of Your Class”. More? A pocket-size manual, “How to Say Everything in 150 – 200 Words” (very useful). Brad’s teaching is innovative and always surprising. You are never sure where his interest will take you.

The journey seams long from the starting line but it is sad for me to say goodbye. I can rewind my memories and recall my struggle with an RSA assignment; this was a tough task. The consternation -- rather -- came the first time I had to post my writing on Brad’s blog. On the other hand, I was delighted to read and analyze stories like “Literally”. This particular one helped me to learn to describe characters indirectly. My good memories do not stop here; the poetry presentation was emotional for exposing some of our deep feelings in front of the class but we clapped and encouraged each other. Over all, what I will look back is Brad’s astute method of forming good students. I chiefly admire his work and the strategy behind it; it seams nothing happened by chance. I can still think of my first day in class; like most of us, I was nervous and not sure of my possibilities, I clearly understood the demand was higher than I experienced before. Now at the end of my journey I smile, felling richer than I thought.

Good luck.

Your friend,

Nella.

Ciao

It has only been a couple of years since I have last been in an English 12 classroom but, the way that Brad taught was more effective in the long run. The way he brought the information to the classroom setting defiantly had a better feeling then all the other teachers I have had in the past. For example in the past I have been taught certain things when writing an essay or in the matter of fact anything. It had to be: formal, high standard of vocabulary (that no one understands), quite long, and you could never put yourself into the essay. During our first few classes Brad had given us an article to read "Writing Good English" by William Zinsser. This article I think had a big impact on my writing for the author explained that the best of writings are clear, and simple. Those two defiantly made re-think, and I needed to reshape my writing for the future so it keeps on improving to my highest potential. To those future students reading I one hundred percent recommend to try, and attend Brad's class.

Right off the back I have to say my two favourite and memorable moments in class would have to be watching the Silent films, and watching and listening to the RSA animations. I absolutely loved the silent movies- "The Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" and "The Kid.". I found it quite refreshing to watch a silent movie because, they are so much more meaningful, and they are able to deliver the passion, and the lesson behind the story clearly. If Brad never introduced me to silent movies I would never have become a fan of them. Finally the RSA animations were quite fun, and interesting to watch. Its hard to believe but even the assignments that came after watching the animations were very enjoyable to do, especially when we broke off into groups to discuss further of what we thought. The most powerful short video I still recall to this day was called "The Powers of Time" I do say if you have time to look it up and you'll learn something new. It will also give you a feeling of how the class is going to go, and what to look forward to when you attend.

Something New:

Something new is like a jellybean, first it’s a bit hard, but after a while it bursts with flavor. Something I learned in English 12 is to be myself no matter what people think of me. English class being one of those courses I thought I would never like, however after a few days of this course I fell in love with it. In English 12 I learned many new things such as narrative essay and the structure of it. We see narrative in short stories which I never knew until Brad told me. Although, it was a difficult new experience but it was interesting. Brad showed us very helpful videos and stories my favorite one is "Writing Good English". In this story we learn that long Latin words are not clear and correct. I always struggled changing my grammar and vocab. Until, Brads has told us he expects us to be right rather than to sound professional but wrong.

This course has be a tremendous experience from the very first presentation to the last. From the group works and the homework’s, sad to say it's all a memory in the end. I had previous English course with Brad it was quite an excellent experience, but everything slowly faded to old memories. I want to thank Brads effort for his unique teaching style; it was interesting wouldn't forget for a while. I could never forget the silent movies that Brad has showed us; I never pictured a silent movie to be so touching. Anyone taking Brad's class in the future you will never be disappointed. English being my worst lecture, but thanks to brad it's one of my favorite lecture. This course has been an excellent experience learnt new things that will be memorable in the future. Sometimes it’s true that “you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory”.

Brads English class has been an absolute wonderful journey forme. I have encountered many learning abilities, as well as small obstacles along the way. I have been with Brad throughout 2013-2014; throughout the years he has showed me the importance of being able to enjoy the fundamental skills with reading, writing and working as a group. As a post-secondary student I have worked in many groups before, but have never experienced what I have in Brads class. Brad encourages students not only to share ideas and writing within our peers, but also gives us an opportunity to be able to work with each and every person in the classroom. This really helped broaden ideas and spark up conversations amongst each other. Whether it may be an argument towards which we may agree or disagree as who the main character could be. Sometimes sitting back and listen to all the comments help keep you open minded about the possibilities of what may or may not be the right answer. Overall I believe I developed stronger communication skills, as well as being able to have an understanding on everyone’s explanations to each and every task. I will definitely be able to use these skills in the future!

Something Memorable

The most memorable moment In Brad’s class was the first poem we had to write and present “Here I am”. It was an introductory to who we were as a person throughout a poem. I could reminisce to the first week of class, when we all were all so shy and timid to even speak to each other beside us. The goal was to read the poem slowly and give our poem to Brad as we finished. All my fellow classmates were not able to meet that goal, as we all stood up at the front completely shaken by the audience as some with their hands frantically shaking, others with words slurring through our mouths; as if we had seen a ghost! One person who really made things memorable for me, was when Monica first spoke in front of the class, I could tell she was extremely terrified. After working with her throughout this year I could see her confidence truly shine. The last poem we wrote "A Note" really showed how much we have tremendously grown throughout the year! We all came to class with confidence, and most importantly a smile on our face. I truly got to experience the growth my classmates and I have encountered.

Something New

When I entered Brad's class for the first time in February, I did so with the expectation that it would match up with my previous experiences with English. Much to my surprise, not only were his classes not mind numbingly boring, but they actually kept me entertained and – more surprisingly for a morning class – awake. The biggest thing that contributed to this were the discussions held during class. With a few minor exceptions (like tests) every piece of writing that you do is shared with your classmates after you write: first, in depth with a small group, then key differences and similarities within your group, with the class. This drove me to greater effort knowing that I would soon be sharing with my peers, as well as providing me with many other examples of the same topics to guide later assignments.

Something Memorable

The most memorable part of Brad's English class was writing my “Here I Am” poem at the beginning of the semester. This was because it was both fun to do as well as being a little bit stressful. Writing the poem was enjoyable because it was very nicely structured and only really took looking back on my life to find the right entertaining moments to fill out the blanks (plus coming up with unique and entertaining metaphors). The small amount of stress came from the knowledge that we were going to be presenting our poems to the class; all people that we did not know. This ended up not being a problem however due to how Brad does presentations in class. This assignment (though it did feel a little like being tossed to the sharks) was a great introduction to everyone in the class. It also managed to not feel like Brad was going to “make judgments on [our] work” like he claims he will be doing on this assignment. Now that I am done being scary(ish), best of luck in what will be the best English class you have had yet!

Something New

The newest one was that I met new classmates, of course. I had to get adjusted to new environment. It was the required threshold to go forward. Brad stuck to his educational method, but there was some difference from the last semester. He gave us more time for discussion, and those took several different forms. His teaching style was very familiar to students who took his English 11 class, but unfamiliar at the same time for some reason or other. I learned writing skills from an article "Writing Good English", editing skills from writing my story, and how to use punctuation marks properly. Also the bigger challenge, the longer narrative essay was given us as an assignment. Furthermore, RSA lectures was introduced by teacher. We watched lots of TED lectures in last semester, but RSA was totally different. Their ideas is illustrated on the white board. These visual lectures are beautiful, efficient and persuasive. The important thing is that I finally got used to these all new things!

Something Memorable

In Brad's English 12 class, I met many impressive fictions: 'Spoiled Man', 'Katania', 'Literally', and short stories. Most of them are excerpts from The New Yorker magazine. I fully enjoyed them, and I can remember every single stories so clearly. I recognized that I had forgotten how much I loved books and stories. And I still have an interest in reading stories, even though those are written in English. It made me rediscover my passion for learning. The other memorable moment was paired discussion time. We shared our stories about the most memorable people in our lives. They lent their ears to my stories. That was an unfamiliar experience for me. Because I don't talk my private story to other people that much. But at that moment, I borrowed a tool named 'writing' and became a more honest person. The paired discussion helped us to relate to each other better after spending time together. I still make some mistakes on grammar and spelling, and I am a little nervous during presentation. However, I should overcome those problems by myself without teacher's help from now on. I learned many things in two semesters. This English class didn't only improve my English skill, but also expanded my horizons. I became more open-minded.

I came into my English 12 class with a goal of achieving a better mark. By what means? Using more obscure vocabularies in my essay? Writing a lot of complicated sentences? Trying to recite one piece of excerpt from Shakespear’s work? Any of those could be hard and boring. To my surprise, teacher Brad entertained us by playing movies and telling stories! The only return he needed from us is our comments. Of course we have to follow his instructions, so we can get the next treat – another movie or story. I was led to write what I thought in an efficient and natural way – choosing simple words, writing clearly, and telling details. After four months of study, my passion for English as a language art has been evoked. The direct impact is that I do not care for my mark any more. Instead, I rethink every comment from Brad and every discussion from my group. This change is so precious that my English study is no more hit or miss.

So many things memorable are recalling in my mind at the end of this term. My classmates and their voice to express, RSA and my hard time to understand, Brad’s smartness and his diligence, are all impressive. My first real improvement came from Brad’s comment, “Work on your prose errors as your ideas deserve a better grammar.” My first time to think the sandwich style essay literally was when I wrote a class exam. My first time to know my classmates was when I appreciated their poetries. My first time to write a one-thousand-words English essay was fulfilled in this term. And the first time, I found myself, not a gifted poet like Matin, not a potential artist like Inna, not a calm veteran like Nella, and even not a manga fan like Cam. I might be only an excellent critic like my classmates trained by Brad.

Something New; Something memorable...
Something new for me, was watching the silent movie " Sunrise: A song of Two Humans”. It was my first original silent film. It amazed me that," the silent movie “captured all of my attention. While I watched the show, I explored the different kind of emotions: happy, sad, funny, excited, and scary. The most remarkable aspect from the film is the decision that the husband and wife had to make after one of them is unfaithful. You must see it! F.W. Murnau demonstrates the morality of life, and it values for Murnau’s fans. This movie is very old (1927), but it is always fresh for me. One more new thing is the RSA animation lecture. I like that it’s knowledgeable and fast. The unique way of the presentation draws the cartoons with the marker and explains the details of the topic at the same time. This class is full of interesting resources .I chose only two of my favorite new things to share here. You would love the English 12 class.

My most memorable moment is the narrative essay. I enjoyed how I organized the hardest task to finish it step by step (with Mr. Brad’s clever lesson plan.) Firstly, I pitched an idea, and posted it on our blogger. To write about the most important character was very special and emotional .It was eleven o'clock at night, I sat alone in my living room to gather the memories of my dad for the first draft of the essay. He was an ambitious farmer; he went through the obstacles of life. He tried many ways to survive and he did it! His inspiration was his family. By this point, my eyes were watery. I forced myself to finish it up. I read it out loud to the audience; my family. My nine year old boy responded to it in a positive way. He asked me many questions about his grandfather. The last, the reviews from the helpful classmates and the teacher were effective methods to improve my writing. I'm delighted of my crystal achievement task. It’s not just homework. It has exceeded more than my expectations. I have enjoyed the supportive family, friendships in the class, and my adaptive skills to use what I have learned. Thank you, Mr. Brad. –207 Words--

There were a lot of new things in English 12 which have broadened my knowledge
forever: (1) writing a poem which was the first time in my life,(2) writing a story which rivived
the happy memories of my youthful days,(3) blogging which was very helpful to know each
other and also to improve our writings by readig the our classmates assinments, and (4)
watching the animation lectures of renowned professors about interesting topics by RSA.
However, the newest thing for me was the Brad's teaching style. Studying in his class was an
experience unlike any other. For instance, he introduced us the article about the methods of
good writing in English by William Zinsser. "Simple is good.Writing is not something we have
to imbroider with fancy stitches to make our self look smart." It was a new understanding of
the old problem. Therefore,I learned to make the perfect sentences with the simpe words -
not just with the ornate, complicated ones-which are more intelligible for everyone.

Memory is a way of holding onto the things we love, the things we are, the things we
never want to lose. There were so many unforgetteble memories which will never be
forgotten, but I will mention only two of them: (1)watching the classic movies-the silent
ones-which made us laugh, and also brought tears to our eyes. I remember when we watched
the movie "Sunrise:A Song of Two Humans", we were extremely influenced by-especially
when the main character wanted to kill his wife. "Oh my God!" One of my classmates said at
that time, and (2)writing and reading the poetry "Here I Am" which was the first poem in my
life was the other memorable thing that I will never forget. I was very nervous at that time. In
spite of the fact that I was ready to recite my poem,I forgot all words of that at the
presentation time! The tremble in my hands is the first thing that come quickly to my mind
from that day! Now,after four months from begining the class, the tremble in my hands has
changed to the smile on my lips. In my opinion, memories are the treasures which need to be
shared,so I really appriciate our teacher,Brad, who taught us to share our treasures.

As I was in Mr. Brad's class for two semesters, I should say, I've learned a mountain of new things in his class. Like, building confidence, new vocabularies, sharing ideas, and etc. To be honest, his class was an entertainment ,and fascinating class of all classes I have had for my English. Moreover, one unique thing in Mr Brad's class , which I felt was very "new" , was watching old silent films, and write about it. Before that, I didn't pay much attention on watching old movies at all . this made me to like and search for old silent films and watch. Another new thing was writing actual poems and reading it out loud to everyone in the class. This soothed me to understand the real meaning of a poem, and how hard or easy writing it would be. Honestly, I was feeling just like a poet and I needed to put all my feelings, emotions, and thoughts together to create a poem.
Thus, we learn new things as time passes in every day we grow

Memories create from the bad and good events happens in our life . well, in Mr. Brad's class, whatever happened were count as good memories for me , except the bad test marks. If I go through one memorable event, I would talk about the long discussion we have had in groups. I remember one of the longest discussion we have had was over the poem (after love) which I have chosen for the homework on that day . The poem was about a love relationship between two couples. which we ended up arguing on girls being more emotional than boys. That was because we couldn't tell if a girl wrote that poem or a boy. That made us to talk a lot over it , and forget about doing the rest of the questions. However, we laughed and enjoyed after hearing all different ideas about that topic from each other.

English 12 with Brad is the most interesting and fun course I have ever taken in my life. It is different than the English courses I took in high school. In high school there were competitions and peer pressure. It drove me crazy. Teachers were critical and harsh on marks. And I felt bad when others were always better than me. Therefore, I never enjoyed high school courses like most people. However, Eng 12 Adult school is very different than regular high school. It contains different age groups. Mostly, people in 30 and 40 's some elders and 5 to 6 younger ones who is in their 20s like myself. This special combination makes my life easier because older people are more mature. And they know how to treat others respectfully. they make a clear contrast to the young teenagers and show me the right way to communicate and socialize. Also, their life experiences become a powerful tool in terms of discussion. Personally, I do not have much thoughts because I do not have much life experiences. however, those adults especially the elders; they are very resourceful-full of life experiences. Taking the same course with elders is a new thing for me and it works great.

Something Memorable

The most memorable moment in this class would be watching the RSA videos. those animations were very educational, and interesting at the same time. I think it was meaningful to watch them. Not just for teenagers ( or younger people), but it was wonderful for each age group. It was because the videos talked about general topics that related to our society and more specifically our personally life. For example, the video " The Truth about Dishonesty " was about small cheaters stole more money than big cheaters. It involved with our humans' morality problems. And how it affected our economy in a bad way. Speaking of humans, the video " The Power Of Time " divided humans into 3 types: past, present, future oriented. It demonstrated that different types of people have different personality and motivation. It was formed by the region they are living in. This class had been very interesting and unique. From January to now, my writing had been improved, so as my speaking. It had been a helpful experience. Now that I am ready to challenge something harder. I really appreciate the time I had spent with everyone in the 6 month, although we only see each other twice a week. Sometimes less than twice-due to Pro-D day, holidays, and the strike. I sincerely thank everyone.

Something New

It's been a long time since I attended high school. The expectation I had when I enrolled in English 12 was quite different than I thought. I remember the first time I met Brad;I noticed right away his unique teaching style. The first assignment terrified me.We all had to write the poem "Here I am" and recited it in front of the class. I got petrified of what lay ahead after the first assignment, nevertheless, every story, poem;discussion we got was more interesting and unique. The "simple English" Brad wanted us to use put me at ease about my essay and overall writing.Even though Brad's techniques were new to me,like (putting students into groups)felt refreshing.During those (get together with other students)different opinions and views on topics helped me with all assignments.I can honestly say that after Brad's class I feel more confident about my English.I realized that sometimes-new things are not as bad as we fear them to be.

It is hard to focus on just one thing from this semester. There were so many things going on, all of which were in its way special and memorable. For instance, Brad himself is quite memorable, his teaching style, the interaction with students, the way he takes the class to a different level not just by his teaching but also with his stories and approach to each and every student. There were a few assignments that we did in the class that will stay with me for a long time. The silent movie-The Song of the Two Humans-and video of the poem-Thousand Kisses Deep-as well as the writing of the "A Note" poem.Brad's approach to silent movies and poetry awoke another side of me, love for the poetry ( not reciting) just reading or watching it.In retrospect, Brad thought me something more then English, he thought me to connect and feel English language on the different level and that is something I'll remember forever.

Something Memorable

This is a great opportunity to express my thoughts, feelings and memories to others in this class and to the fellow future students. This class was one of the most memorable classes I have ever had. I have experienced a class like never before by having classmates of any ages and races. One of the most memorable assignments was “The Spoiled Man”. I was surprised to see many of my classmates talk about the story in their future assignments. It was a typical story for me regarding my experience living in Pakistan where “Rezak” lived. I am familiar with the culture and aspects of life in Pakistan. It wasn’t so astonishing for me, but my classmates found this story extremely interesting and rare. Presenting poem was by far the second most memorable assignment. It was staggering when Amy recited her memorized poem. She did forget a stanza, but it was still amazing. Overall, this class was like a family and I have many memories to live on with and hopefully I get to see all of my classmates in the future.

Something New
I remember when I first started grade eleven with Mr. Brad back in fall of 2013. Everything was new for me including the class, classmates, environment and Brad’s way of teaching. I found Mr. Brad’s way of teaching extremely effective as a second language learner. I wouldn’t be happier if I had any other teacher. From posting homework on the blog, group discussions, poetry to watching movies and writing about them were all fun, interesting and effective. Writing Poem in this class was something new to me. It was a great way to express and share my feelings and passion. I created and presented a poem about my desired career and it made me learn more about my future career due to the research I did for this assignment. I have never done such assignment before. I was lucky to be part of this amazing class, a class where I built the bedrock of my future career through learning and increasing my English proficiency. Overall, I have experienced many new things throughout this class and I sincerely appreciate Mr. Brad’s dedication to helping all of his students.

Something New

Thinking of something new is a bit more difficult after having spent the past 27 years in the classroom (and having written quite a few of these). I’ve said it before: the students in a class are what is most “new” each term I teach. Just when I think I’ve met all the possible varieties of student, someone surprises me yet again. What Tony said here about the mix of young and old (er) students pretty much sums up what makes our classroom unique. Some of you also made an attempt at describing me as a teacher and, for me, it is always new to be reading about yourself in your professional role—scary, too! It seems to me that having new minds to influence and shape every term is enough newness for me. It is amazing that, after so many years, one can still be surprised by life, by students, by one’s profession, but that’s what is so positive about being here at the ALC. I’m very glad to have shared these months with all of you.

Grade 12

The personal transformation of your classmate, Monika, is a treasure to remember for a long time. It was one of those moments in a teacher’s life—what to do? what to say?—at our first “Here I Am” presentation. I guess my instructions, “to breathe and take your time,” worked well enough, but what is most remarkable is how well Monika was able to build on that experience and then to excel the next time she stood before our class. All of you deserve credit for the support you offered to her and for what you shared and gave to each other this term. Thank you.

Grade 11

It’s harder teaching a small class, but this small one is a memorable one. Every one of you was essential to the success of this term—your steady attendance, on-time homework assignments, willingness to engage and discuss difficult materials made my life easier and the classroom more effective. Besides, I had a rare opportunity to really get to know you all very well. Some of you face personal challenges and I want you to know that I admire your courage to take on a difficult course. See you in Grade 12 everyone!
