Something New; Something Different; Something Memorable

Your words to us and to the class that follows you. Remember what Kurt Vonnegut advised: "Sound like yourself" and "Say what you mean." Oh, and "Keep it simple" too.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Something New

This term marks a new record for “just-in-time” delivery of a reading. Our work on “Growing up Digital; Wired for Distraction” took place only three days after its publication. It seems important to me that we address the astounding changes around us. How we communicate has changed, but how we deal with how it changes us hasn’t. We live in interesting times but sometimes I’m reminded of Plato’s cave analogy, where people are fascinated by their illusions, observing life second hand. All the better reason for us to spend time discussing the digital world and deciding how to proceed. —99 words

Something Different

My classes this term delayed their responses to blog posts more than I’ve experienced in the past. With a few notable exceptions, the posts poured in well after I’d retired for the night on the day before due. I have mixed feelings about this trend: on one hand, I think that taking time to think things is healthy; on the other, I miss the leadership of stronger students who post early. But then, although it isn’t a huge problem, there is the valid concern that later students will only provide a different version of something already said by others. —99 words

Something Memorable

I remember walking down the hallway one morning, hearing the class deeply engaged in conversation. It was like a radio tuned to multiple stations. You sounded so, for want of a better word, happy. Don’t ask me what you were discussing—probably “The Woman of the House.” A blogger argued that one should note the silence of the characters in William Trevor’s story. Because of it, we don’t know, truly, what happens at the end. And so it is with much of life, which despite all our advances, retains its mystery. That was a satisfying moment: a class full of students talking loudly about a mysterious silence! —107 words

This experience sets a new learning for me. Our approach in tackling a short story or any reading was quite different from my past experiences in English subjects. Brad had the best strategy in having been able to fully understand the story. Having read the story, I learned the effectiveness of annotation, individual reaction, group sharing, and lastly the class discussion. Going through this process, I was able to correct misinterpretations I had for the story. It was a package of learning that leads me to a better understanding. And as I continue my educational journey and achieving the plans I have, I will always remember this learning process as a “weapon.” – 112 words

Something Different

Using other tools for learning aside from books was something different I noted of. Way back in my college years, a book is always my arm for me to know how to write, read essays and stories, and do some reaction papers. Having attended the class, I realized there are times that you don’t really need a book. Drills and exercises were more helpful for critical thinking. Guide sheets were helpful too. They were very concise and condensed, as compared to a book. It was more motivating and I became more focused listening to the teacher. – 96 words

Something Memorable

On the first day of my class, I imagined that I was in a UN summit because of the different languages I heard. In my previous schools, I could easily relate with others because we shared similar culture. However, recently, I have to be cautious dealing my classmates. As I befriended them, I discovered the uniqueness and culture differences. But we shared commonalities, very kind, respectful, and friendly. And I could not single out a moment that I was having a hard time dealing with them. But, the day has come that I have to bid goodbye to all of them. It was sad to think about it. Glee! I will always still keep in touch with then because they have been my “Facebook” friends. - 125 words

Something New:

This term marks my third trials of English 12, and everyone who knows me wondering why I am taking this “boring class” three times with Brad. It seemed useless to me for quite some time because I’ve always thought that it was a waste of time to study English 12 and nobody would really care whether I’ve graduated with English 12 in real life, and not wanting to go to college at that time. But when I actually wanted to go to college, I came to realization that I need English 12 to go to college. -98 words.

Something Different:

My class this term was very unique for me I have to say, because it was my first time to post late on the blog: I was always the first one to post on the blog because I’ve thought that if I was the first one to post it, then I wouldn’t have to worry about not posting it in late, but later when Brad told me my final mark was lower because of my first post on the blog. And since then, I was trying to be careful not to post it late. -96 words.

Something Memorable:

I still remember when I saw Brad at the first time. He was pretty tough and strict as I was told. And whenever it was in class write, he was so strict about the marks and I think nobody in the class was getting above B or higher. But I grew to like Brad—more and more. Especially, when Brad commented the works we’ve done despite of our casual grammar mistakes, of course Louise does it better, but I will treasure those moments forever. As always, he’s doing the homework as we’re doing because in the past, no teachers would be dreaming of doing that! And of course I will miss all of you and yes, Brad too.-119 words.

Something new:

The way of our having English 12 is totally new to me. Except the fact of no textbooks, classmates of different ages, and various kinds of group study, what I want to mention most is doing the homework by writing blogs. I have never anticipated that my teacher, Brad, who is in his fifties, is so excellent and expert in using computer and blogs, but it is completely new to me. I still remember my first time of doing my homework, I had to email my comments to Brad since I didn’t know how to put my comment on the blog. As time goes by, I began to love the blog, and going over the blog and appreciating the comments from my classmates have become one of my new leisure enjoyments. ---131 words

Something different :

I have read some English poems before but have never imagined that I can write one, so when Brad announced that we were going to write a poem, I wondered how I could complete this tough task. During the whole week, I read the examples over and over, studied every line and even every word they used, trying to understand them and figure out my similar experience in my life. When I finally finished it, I was so excited that I read it aloud to everyone I met and asked for comments and corrected my poem again and again. I also love the way we present our poems and I am expecting more chances of doing that since I know I am more confident ever since.---126 words

Something memorable:

As to something memorable, I would say that’s my teacher and my classmates who are always vivid in my mind . Brad is so helpful and kind, I will take him as one of my friends and would like to keep in touch with him in my future life. Vanca, my best friend, who has suffered a lot in the past but still quite strong in mind, moved me and inspired me in my study. Min, who has been in Vancouver for a long time and acted as a guide to me with many kind suggestions. The heated discussions among us in the corridor of the school has become a part of my study. Of course, I will not forget Boris who is often late with a big breakfast; Esther and Joe--- my first group mates who are always early for the class and the blog; Hollyc, who speaks so fast that difficult for me to keep;Adnan, who stands in the back of the classroom because of his back and can speak some Chinese; Ru, who lives close to me and speaks very good English. And I will also miss Amina for her card of Christmas greeting; Melanie for her good habit of making notes; Mandeep for her carefulness of her work; Marjo for his special gift in music and Marco for his love of catching snowflakes with his tongue. I will cherish the friendship and memory in this school for a long time. ---246 words

Something New

In this class, I experienced so many new things. First of all, learning about “Film Terms” was interesting but the most exciting part was when we watched the opening scenes of different movies. It gave me an opportunity to understand my classmates taste in movies. In addition to film I also learned a lot about poetry. For example, the “10 tips to help you improve your poetry” increased my ability to write beautiful poems. I will never forget Kara Ziehl’s recommendations to “Avoid Clichés” and “Revise, Revise, Revise.” --90 words

Something Different

English 12 was bit different from other classes which I took in PALC. I was surprised to see so many new faces which I never saw before in the last two years. This was a big class with more than twenty two students. Unique personalities, diverse cultures, and different age groups make a perfect picture of mosaic. Time seemed to be “flying by” as I came one step closer to graduating. ---77 words

Something Memorable

I remember when Brad asked us to write a narrative essay. I spent almost one week thinking about what to write. Talking with my classmates sharing lifetime memories really helped me to choose a topic for my essay. After finishing the first draft I exchanged my essay with other classmates. I must have read almost five different essays each of which touched my heart. I also received feedback which pointed out numerous silly mistakes that I should avoid in the future. Writing a narrative essay was a brilliant experience. ---94 words

Something New

A realization in my ability to appreciate and enjoy literature and writing is something new for me. I use to find English class pointless and boring. I can remember back to my high school English classes: having to amuse myself by either doodling or daydreaming. Not so in this class, I found the curriculum fun and interesting; however, quite challenging. “Kurt Vonnegut”, “Ghost World”, poetry reading, group exercises and the TED videos were some of my favorites and pushed my brain to the limit and ended up giving me new found appreciations that I would not have discovered on my own. Oh yeah, and Brads quirky humour was a blast too. -111 words

Something Different

Technology in the classroom: being taught by wireless keyboard, YouTube and blogs! Not quite the classroom I remember: where dusty chalkboard would smear my old pudgy English teacher’s brown corduroy jacket. It just makes me wonder where technology, in regards to teaching, will be 20 to 30 years from now. The article “Growing up Digital” was very insightful and worthy of discussion. Can humans advance in a positive way right along with technology? Speaking from experience, I found the newer high tech classroom a lot more enjoyable and relatable. Whatever the future brings us, I think that we would be better-off not scaling back on our innovative technological tools, especially in schools and teaching. – 115 words

Something Memorable

When Brad gave us the narrative essay assignment, I was undecided for the longest time. I pondered the possible epiphanies in my life. What were the “ah-ha” moments I’ve had that would be worthy of over 1300 words: traveling to the birthplace of my Italian ancestors, meeting the love of my life? Both good stuff but I needed something unique with a lot of content. This would have to be about my old high school pal Jeff who died in a tragic boating accident at the young age of 22. I haven’t been more proud and moved by anything that I have written in my life and this story will be a part of me until my last breath. -119 words

The Blog gave me a new way to communicate with others. This is my first time to use it and I didn't even expect that it is easy to use. Also, it connects me with my classmates and add them on facebook. I never thought that an English teacher (Brad) will use the internet for us to post most of our homework. It's also helps me to get ideas with Brad's first post. This blog can change the old lined paper into a computer based file. I like this Blog and maybe I could use this for other groups. -98 words

This is my first time to encounter an English class that has no book. The first day i came into the class, I ask Brad for the book and he said, "there's no book, I'll just give you handouts," and i was surprised because most English class have book(s). On the second hand, I think it is better to use handouts instead of books because it is more interesting to read. This is also my first time to meet a teacher who is not strict on our works unlike other English teacher and I was impressed about it. -99 words

Something Memorable

The activity I would never forget are the group works. It does not only share our thoughts about the article we're talking, but also share something about ourselves to other. "Two heads are better than one," is what Brad wants us to do which really works. By this, i can get more opinions based on the topic and ask corrections to enhance my writings. I also like this group works because after we gave opinions on the topic, we can share some of our past lives. Even though I don't have a good memory, but I could tell that some stories I've heard are very inspiring and some of them are really funny and makes me laugh so much. -121 words

A few times I mentioned to my friends that I am taking English 12 and was faced with a response: “Do you have to read many books?” Honestly, during the course I have used more Internet than paper-bind coursebooks. Blog assignments, TED lectures and viewing recommended films filled a few of my evenings. It was a new experience watching the films with my husband and on occassions a slovak friend, who lives nearby, followed by discussions. Unintentionally they became part of my English 12 progress. Involving them would have been impossible had I asked them to read a book with me.

Something different
Having all the support from Brad for switching to individual study was a pleasant variation. Do not take me wrong, I missed the learning energy and influential interactions in class, but with the start of a full-time job this arrangement kept me connected and on track. Brad has always presented a note or two from what had gone on in the classroom. Then Andrea joined the Thursdays with her views and minigroupwork returned. It was different not to be in a class but it worked out better then I had expected.

Something memorable
We all strive to make memorable impressions. Usually what is “the first time” stays enbeded in mind for eternity. It was the first time for me to write a poem in English. The bonus was that I even enjoyed the experience! Another first was writing and seriously counting words. My problem is that I write far too many. I like putting ideas on paper but dread the cutting back part. Luckily, this term I had plenty of inspiring topics for practising this skill.

Something New
Reading poetry is fun, but writing a poem is really a new challenge for me, a purely green hand. Guided by the poetic techniques in “10 tips”, I tried my best to write it by applying the unique uses of senses, alliteration, rhyme and rhythm with great caution. The poem must follow the strict requirements of adopting the same stanzas and punctuation of the model list poem “A Note.” Happily, I chose cyber love, a hot topic on the net, as the theme of my poem to richly imagine a new kind of love affair. To my delight, my maiden work was rewarded with a satisfying mark. —106 words

Something Different
My 1000-word narrative essay will definitely differ from the others’ because it should be based on an event in my individual life with a unique insight. After much careful consideration, I established a theme—forgetting the pessimistic misfortune (my life-threatening brain tumor surgery taken three and a half years ago) and treasuring the optimistic present. Life is vulnerable, but life is also indomitable. Miraculously, I fell on my feet thanks to the brilliant medical skills of several supreme neurosurgeons of a famous hospital in Shanghai, China. Blurred with tears of gratitude for my husband’s everlasting tender loving care, I finished my essay with great tranquility, genuinely cherishing my second life from the bottom of my heart. —116 words

Something Memorable
How time flies! I’ve been living in Vancouver for 3 years and I’ve experienced something exciting and valuable. Memorable, above all, were the days I spent in English 12 class, directed by Brad, a respectable teacher. Our whole class has great esteem for him since he’s not only strict but also kind, gentle, generous and easy-going. Every day in the classroom, we are lucky and happy to see his sunny and smiling but not serious or straight face. He always encourages us to make great efforts towards a specific goal to promote our listening, speaking, reading and, most importantly, writing abilities. Brad elaborately chose many writing guide materials, two fictions and a newly published article entitled with the hot topic of digital world, requiring us to read in great details and write responses. We also viewed TED talks, attended frequent group discussions and had a vivid class presentation to demonstrate our poems. In addition, the selected popular movies enriched our knowledge and favorably enabled us to write our personal comments on them with the guide of the “Film Terms.” What’s more, we endeavored to display our 12-piece writings at our class blog. It’s absolutely an unforgettable experience for all of us to enjoy and exchange individual fruits of our hard labor. In a word, Brad’s veteran writing directions counts for a lot for us and we’ll be heartily grateful to him for all he has done for us. — 238 words

Something New

Something New I learned was writing a good poem. I really enjoyed writing “Here I am.” The poem took time to write, but the overall result was satisfying. Hearing other classmate’s poems was amiable, and taught me something new about them. Poems take time to read and comprehend, but once you understand them it’s a good experience. A good poem will be littered by emotionally strong words that will capture a reader’s heart. I never thought I would enjoy writing or reading a poem, but once I took the time to sit and think, I actually found it gratifying.

Something Different

The whole style of Brad’s teaching was different for me to adapt to at first. The class engagements and group discussions made it enjoyable and effective. One of the teaching techniques that really made his class different than others was the use of the blog. I personally enjoyed doing homework on the blog because it gave me an opportunity to engage in the class without actually having to be there. His way of teaching makes it easy for a student to assimilate the assignments given. As a student, I feel that I gained impudence because of his proficient ways.

Something Memorable

I remember sitting in class dumbfounded after watching “Ghost World.” Hearing feedback from my classmates was something that stuck with me. Every person felt so different about the movie. The movie was unique and confusing at first. After analyzing everyone's presumptions, I understood the storyline and was able to engage in the deliberation. The most memorable part about the movie was “Doug.” I must admit that his character was hysterical. Overall, the film was memorable, and I will reminisce about watching it in my English 12 class.

ps. Thanks Brad for being a good teacher and providing a positive learning environment!
Cheers

It was new to discuss variety of topics with each other with the open heart regardless of their age and skin color. Whether you are young or old, native or second language speaker, we gave an advice and got feedback from the classmates. It was interesting to hear young students ` (compared to my age) thoughts in the classroom or on the blog because I hardly got a chance to talk with them. Brad's approach to teaching English was unlike any other than I’ve experienced. Traditionally teachers would pile on loads of reading, either from: text book, novels, or Shakespeare. My main concern would be completing the reading, interpreting the meaning, or memorizing the terms; leaving the writing assignment's that follow to be placed on the back burner. Brad's technique of eliminating too much reading and replacing it with group discussion followed by short writing responses, took away the pressure and guess work of interpreting a piece of writing. I'm eternally grateful to Brad, as his techniques allowed me to gain different perspectives, focus on improving my writing skills, and taking his edits to heart; in-turn, I feel I’ve become a better thinker and writer. ---122 words

Something Different

Having my assignments posted on the class blog site for everyone to see and judge, was something I was very weary and nervous of at the terms start, but became an effective aid in improving my writing skills. In my previous years of English study, in an attempt to improve my marks I would spruce-up my writing assignments by using a thesaurus, and was always surprised when my marks came back lower than I expected on a piece of writing that to me, appeared to be intelligent. By taking away the confidential nature of teacher and student work I began to consider what I was putting out there for others to see in a realistic manner. Not wanting to come off as anybody but myself, I learned the valuable lesson of “sound like yourself,” and am now able to take accountability for my work.

My classmates of different ages, many with family’s as their responsibility, a language barrier to over come, and the same financial concerns as myself, where there regardless with an impressive determination to better their life and their family's. This term introduced me to some new “must-read- stories”, but my favorite one was “Gold boy, Emerald girl”. The story clearly proved to me that any love is from a wish for somebody’s happiness. It is important to me to know that I cannot judge love and I am glad to have a proof in this short story. To me, the class design and content is absolutely a new thing, and I like the film "Ghost World" the best. Of course, the way of watching movie for enjoyment is quite different from watching for analysis, but the combination of both will add extra delight to the viewer. It is a pleasure to learn new techniques to add to my knowledge. Mostly, the discussion about the film was interesting with some obscure points, but exciting over all. I think my teacher, Brad, who was laughing while watching the film “Ghost World” knows well his purpose by adding a chapter like a film in the English 12 curriculum as I know it is one of the learning styles (media in the class).

Writing a poem in English is not really an easy assignment and a different experience, but the poem itself reflects our feelings or ourselves if I’m correct. The tough times I have gone through burst my feelings on paper following the ticktack. Trying to write something different from my classmates. Standing in the front of the class and reciting or presenting my poem was hard, too. It was absolutely different and interesting to hear other’s poems. Overall, it gave me more experience and confidence about writing pomes in English.

I remember all the characters in the movie, including Enid, who was a lost girl in this movie. She sees the world differently from others.
