A Favourite Popular Song

Post a link to a favourite song (YouTube will have many available) before you come to class. After the link, briefly say why you like the song. Mention a lyric (words) that you prefer. Be sure to identify the performer or band by name.

NOTE: If you would like to share your final draft of the narrative essay with other students, please send a copy in Word format to Brad before class next Wednesday. I can create a special blog post to help you share the results of all your hard work.

I like to listen to the music, and feel it is a beautiful part in life. I have changed many favorite music and songs during growing up and experienced in different cultures and languages. But one thing I didn’t change much is about how I feel a song is good. I’m attracted by the singers’ voices and the music more than the lyrics. Especially, when they have their own MTV; I feel that the visual effects are powerful too. I think that’s why I prefer to listen to music and songs than to read poems, and I’m the one, perceptual, strongly affected by what I can hear and see.
I have an extreme example, a song without lyrics; I don’t know its name, but I like it. It’s only about four minutes, if you have time, I’d like you to listen to this.

As requested, I chose a recent favorite song to share with you all.

It is the song, “Starry Starry Night,” by Don Mclean. He wrote the song after he watched Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night.”
I like the way Don Mclean described the painting, and my favourite Lyrics are

“Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free”

It is a kind of struggling inside of every human being; we only have different expressions.

I want to introduce Korean traditional song named ‘Arirang’. Singer’s name is Kim Mia who is Chinese of Korean ancestry and she won the first prize at the Chinese song festival with this song recently. It is a kind of love song and Lyrics is very simple. “Arirang Arirang arario, Arirang Arirang arario, The lover who dismissed me will be hurting his leg (having a foot sickness) within sibri(roughly 4km).”

Next one is famous Korean figure skater Kim Yuna’s figure skating with the background music, ‘Arirang’.

Music always accompanies me. As a singer of the chorus at the university, I had sung the folk song, the popular song, and the Beijing opera. In the chorus, my part was the soprano, but I often followed the contralto. So, I generally was pointed by the director. However, the music is important for me, especially the classical music (Mozart is my favorite); I immerse myself in the musical artistic conception.

Nowadays, I want to share my favorite song-“I Have a Dream” with my teacher and classmates. It will bring us new dreams and wishes in the New Year (2010).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFHbwikzNds&feature=related

In 1979, the “I Have a Dream” was sung by “Swedish pop group ABBA.” It was popular and successful in the world then. The old song is written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus; its lyric words strongly attract me:

I have a dream, a fantasy
To help me through reality
And my destination makes it worth the while
Pushing through the darkness still another mile

This optimistic view tells us that the dream is surrealistic but realizable.

“You are beautiful” by James Blunt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25lHRoZyG98) is my favorite song. I love this song because this was the first English song I heard (on radio) after landing in Canada. I like the lyrics, music, and singer’s voice in this song. The lyrics worth remembering in this song are:

You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

I listen to music while I am driving. Since my childhood, I added many kinds of musical styles to my taste. However, I still dislike the violin music and songs based on it. I love medium-paced songs with clear and meaningful lyrics, and music based on guitar, piano, drums, etc.

Other songs of the similar style that I like are:
Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue”

Tom Petty’s “Free Falling”

Shakira’s “hips don’t lie” because of the dancing style
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75ec83Qj2UE)

And
Stevie Wonder’s “I just called to say I love you”

Music has always been an important part of my life ever since remembers! I appreciate all kinds of music and songs from all around the world. Actually, I do have lots of favorite songs, and I mostly like Hindi and Farsi. However, one of my all-time favorites English song is “You’re My Heart, You’re MY Soul” by German europop duo Modern Talking (1984). I liked this song when I was very young even though I didn’t know the meaning of it, and I still love it. It’s so soft and beautiful, and I’ll never get tired of it. It also brings back memories from my home town.

Deep in my heart - there's a fire - a burning heart
Deep in my heart - there's desire - for a start
I'm dying in emotion
It's my world in fantasy
I'm living in my, living in my dreams

You're my heart, you're my soul
I'll keep it shining everywhere I go
You’re my heart, you're my soul
I'll be holding you forever
Stay with you together

I would also like to share my favorite music with you all. This music, Concierto de Aranjuez is very unique for me, which composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in Paris -1939. He was a “Spanish composer of classical music and virtuoso pianist”. I usually listen to this music by turning lights off (dark) and enjoy it.

My Favorite song --- The Prayer
By Celine Dion and Josh Groban (1995) (4:30’)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIKzhOp5608

I like this song because it is exact match of the prayer I want to say.

“I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go.
And help us to be wise in times when we don't know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we'll be safe”.

This song has been touching my heart whenever I listen to it. It is not about a religion, its about people who are asking for guidance, the light that will guide them the right way in making decisions or guiding them to where they should go.

Enjoy this simple, spiritual, comforting piece of music!

Happy Holiday!

It was difficult to choose one song, since I like all kind of music, but heavy metal. The first time I heard this song was in the Bellagio’s Hotel “Fountain Show” in Las Vegas; it touched all my senses, and I want to share it with you, it is a classical crossover song: “Con Te Partire”, Andrea Bochelli sings it with symphonic accompaniment in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcrfvP11Hbo

The lyrics I like the most:

For you I’ll fly
Wait for me
I’ll arrive

My trip’s end is you
For living it we two
For you I’ll fly

By skies and seas
Up to your love
For you I’ll fly

I enjoy all kinds of music, but I mostly like music that has true meaning and really touches me.
This song was sang by our youth choir a month ago, at a youth conference that we had. I loved it because its who I am and what I truly belive in.When I hear it makes me think of where I have been and come from ,but most of all its about someone who I know that is a friend and his name has true meaning and power for me.

VERSE 1
Jesus, the most beautiful name of all names
Jesus, the only name that brings healing and strength
When I speak Your Name, mountains move, chains are loosed
When I speak Your Name, darkness flees, it has no hold on me

CHORUS
Jesus, the most beautiful name that I know
You’re the exalt- ed One
Jesus, You have the power alone
You lift the lone- ly one, Je- sus

VERSE 2
Jesus, the most wonderful name of all names
Jesus, the only name that brings freedom and hope
When I speak Your Name, mountains move, chains are loosed
When I speak Your Name, darkness flees, it has no hold on me

I have heard people say, oh, I can’t live without music. Music is everything to me. Well, music does not mean everything to me, but I use music for specific purpose. I listen to music to relax, to play in the background while reading, cooking, and getting chores done at home. An example of such music would be jazz by Kenny G

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOA7EzEoPW0

I also listen to certain type of music to get excited, and to get inspired through clear sound of instruments, meaningful lyrics; I’m great fond of talented singers as well. I’m a big supporter of such music and it’s creators. This is John Mayer- his hit song your body is a wonderland.

Last, but not least are remix, techno or electronic sounds that will push me beyond my strengths at the gym, pump my heart rate, and help me focus on my workout rather than checking out others. I pick them carefully, and listen to them a few times to find out if I really like it. Tiesto is my favorite DJ, and this is his remix with Andain from California.

When I was a kid, I liked to sing. All the songs I heard in the 80’ were those of popular singers in HK and Taiwan. I still remembered I used all my saving to buy a “walkman” -- a box that you could put a cassette into it and play and listen from it in the earphones. One time, I was listening from the “walkman” during the class. Suddenly, all the classmates were looking at me with strange faces. I didn’t know that I was so indulged into the song that I was singing out loud in the classroom.

When I am older now, I like to listen to the music without lyrics. The music I want to introduce is named “Clock” from “Twelve Girls Band”. The band played with the Chinese musical instruments from Tang Dynasty such as Pipa, Dizi, Guzheng, Erhu, Yangqin, etc. The special thing is that the music combined the old musical instruments into the modern harmony such as jazz, pop and classical.

The piece “Clock” has two versions to compare, one is played by the modern western instruments and the other is played by the Chinese instruments by the “twelve girl band.”

Favourite foriegn language song (From a Japenese anime):Butter-fly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg0--OkqN-4&feature=related

Many of you in this class may think anime is a source of entertainmain for small kids, but in fact, many of them actually illuminates certain messages throughout the plots. My favourite foreign popular song is from an opening song of a once popular Japanese anime “Digimon”. The name of the song is “Butter-fly”, which indicates how a person evolves, opens his wings, and catches his dreams, despite how unpredictable future is. When I was a kid, I remember how crazy my classmates were toward this anime, but could not fully understand the meaning inside it. When I grew up, realizing how reality truely is, the song sort of pull back all those joyfulness as a kid.
For some people, this could just be another song from another “immature Cartoon”. But for me, this song is about the memory as a child, the innocent beings that are capable to “dream freely”, which I had lost a long time ago.

Favourite English song (Yes, from another Japanese anime):Come on, Sweet Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Yb3cN5EQbs

Contrary to my previous post, my favourite English song indicates a complete opposite theme from my favourite foreign languarge song. The song shows a person that had gave up all hope and willing to abandon everything, which actually fits the plot of the anime. The lyric, though depressing, reflaxes to part of my inner feeling. I also love the tone as well.

I listen to his song before every playoff or championship game. I listen to because its sais put everything you have into what youre doing. So by the time you collapse you have no regrets.

(Intro)
sometimes you just feel tired. You feel weak. And when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up. But you gotta search within you, gotta find that inner strength and just pull that shit out of you, and get that motivation to not give up, and not be a quiter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

(Chorus)
Till the roof comes off, till the lights go out
Till my legs give out, cant shut my mouth.
Till the smoke clears out, am I high? perhaps...
Ima rip this shit till my bone collapse.
Till the roof comes off, till the lights go out
Till my legs give out, can't shut my mouth.
Till the smoke clears out, and my high wears out
Ima rip this shit till my bone collapse.

This song is an original sound track from the movie, “Leon.” The song is called “Shape Of My Heart” by Sting. I like the guitar play in this song, and also like the singer’s voice.

My favorite lyrics:

He deals the cards as a meditation
And those he plays never suspect
He doesn't play for the money he wins
He doesn't play for respect
He deals the cards to find the answer
The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance

One of my favorite songs is by Tupac Amaru Shakur

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeMKM-eQPB4

“Changes” by Tupac has to be one of my favorites because of the great message behind it. This is one of those songs, where Tupac showed his lyrical abilities and his perfect flow.

"How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
but things changed, and that's the way it is"

"We ain't ready, to see a black President
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact
the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks
But some things will never change"

“How does it feel,
To be on your own?
Like a complete unknown.
Like a rolling stone.”

This is an excerpt from Bob Dylan’s hit song, Like a Rolling Stone. I was in
grade school when I first heard it, and I had no idea what the song meant—I was
suppose to be listening to Disney songs—but the acoustic guitar strumming
along with Dylan’s grungy and off-tune voice immediately captured my ears.

I remember my uncle, a part-time college student and a full-time activist,
teaching me songs about “Peace, Love and Understanding” (later on, I found out
that it was actually a title of an Elvis Costello song!) He told me how music and
lyrics had a huge impact on his life, “Music changed the way I look at the world
and humanity; it changed my way of living,” he usually says.

He introduced to me artists such as Cat Stevens, John Lennon, Nick Drake, Van the Man, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and Marley, to name some. That is why sometimes I feel I was born in the wrong generation. I love old and undying music, with lyrics that will make you think, rhymes that will make you hum and beats that will make you stump your feet and groove at the dance floor.

Whenever I feel down and the day is gloomy, I’d play my Van Morrison record and sing “There’d be days like this”. Then all of a sudden, as if Morrison put a
spell on me, I start feeling better. Bob Marley’s reggae brings joy to my mornings. “Everything is ‘gonna be alright,” he’d sing with his cozy voice together with his band’s hyped bass-lines and drumbeats—I start dancing, though I know I am bad at it (as if my feet are both left). Every time I miss my father—he died a few years ago—I’d listen to Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son” and that surely brings back my father’s memories.

There are certain songs that reflects my life like mirror. It is like reading my story in the song lyrics and hearing the soundtrack of my everyday journey in the melody.

Since I grew up in a Christian home, singing and listening hymn was a great part of my life. I would say music is like breathing to me; just do it without any notice or announcement.

At early age, I started to sing at home and church and it practically continued all my life; however, as I get older, I prefer listening to singing.

Over the years, Christian music has changed a lot. When I was young, Christian music was classical and mainly piano or organ was used in the church. But these days, church music adopted contemporary music and all kinds of instruments are being used to accompany the songs

I’d like share one song that had been sung by the American Idol in year 2008,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6G0U8Vg6nY

“Shout to the Lord”
Shout to the Lord all the earth,
Let us sing- - -
I sing for the joy at the work of Your hands,
Forever I’ll love you, forever, I’ll stand,
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you
