Sample taken from “breaking dawn”

Colon and commas are used in this example.

“A few of the buildings had businesses on the first floor: a dirty bar with the windows painted black, a psychic’s supply store with neon hands and tarot cards glowing fitfully on the door, a tattoo parlor, and a daycare with duct tape holding the broken front window together.”

This example uses colon to introduce. The colon makes us to expect what kind of businesses were on the first floor.

Imitating the sample:

A several things were scattered in my older brother’s messy room: a pizza box that was hidden under his bed, a dusty radio and coming from which was a deafening beat of his favorite music, an opened book, and a pile of clothes right in the middle of his room

You mean "Breaking Dawn"? Capitals required!

Your imitation works very well Makassia, and also gives a good idea of traits of character through "showing."

We use "colon" sometimes when we need to separate an explanation, rule, pr after the salutation of a business letter or in the geading of a business memo. And we also use colon between the hour and minutes, chapter and the verse. Also we need a colon in the Bible.

Some examples from the website:
1. Music is more than a mechanical arrangement of sounds: it is an expression of deep feeling and ethical valuse.
2. Dear faculty Member:
3. My favourite TV show always starts at 7:00 P.M
4. Genesis 1:18-20 , part 3:121 , Vol. 2:34

Some examles from my head:
1. My perfect day consists of: work out at recreation centre, meet my best friends and take enough sleep under the sunlight.
2. I am making a special sauce by using ketchup and mayo with the ratio of 2:1
3. My family members are: father, mother, two older sisters, younger sister, and me.
4. I have to go to bus stop before 8:05.

The potion contained some exotic ingredients: snails’ eyes, bats’ tongues and garlic.

The colon is used to introduce a list of potion contained some exotic ingredients. We can use a colon to introduce a list as long as the phrase before the colon can stand alone and still make sense.

We have to stop doing these harmful things: polluting the rivers, burning fossil fuels and using our cars.

I just realized that I was put into the "colon" group... but I had already made a comma quote.

Here is a sample from
"Planet Earth - The Future" by Jonathon Porrit :

"The Earth Temperature, after going through a cooling period, has risen by 1 degree celcius over the past century."

The commas added to this sentence enclose extra information. They separate both parts of the original sentence. If the middle segment was to be removed, the sentence would would still make sence.

My own example using the same structure:

The book "Twilight", which came to the big screen in November, has gained popularity rapidly.
