Do all work by Friday please. Write two short paragraphs (50 to 75 words), one on the protagonist and the other on your assigned character.

For the protagonist, Enid, explain one of her traits based on her dress, or a gesture or an action.

For your assigned character choose one of the topics below:

Write an interior monologue (what a character might be thinking) during a scene where the character is silent (speaks no dialogue for a period of time).

Give an example of any repeated actions or gestures made by the character and how these help to communicate a trait of character to the viewers.

Seymour in the Diner (monologue)

“I wonder if I should sit at the counter or in a booth?”

“What would it look like if she doesn’t show up and I’m all alone in a booth?”

“Ah, a milkshake. Maybe I should have ordered a chocolate. Wonder if she’ll think I’m old-fashioned because I ordered a vanilla shake.”

“Damn! She’s already 10 minutes late.”

“It’s been half an hour. She’s not coming. I knew this wasn’t going to work out. Just my usual bad luck. What an idiot for coming here in the first place! What was I thinking?”

____________________________________
-Protagonist: When I saw the protagonist, Enid, in the movie called “Ghost World,” I begin to think of her as a ‘punk’ because she dresses like sort of punkish style, and acts differently unlike the others, like in a sarcastic way.

-Josh looking at Seymour and Enid together at the convenience store and drops an ice-cream bowl (monologue):

“Oh no, what is she doing here with that man?”

“What is his name again? Seymoor, or Sey…”

“Oh sh*t, I can’t believe I dropped an ice-cream bowl again!”

ENID

Something needs to be noticed is Enid’s outfit, from the beginning to the end. Her makeup is heavily punkish, like the metal color lipstick she wears and the dark eyeliners and she likes to wear heavy color clothes. It’s very common in her age to have the desire to show some differences and draw people’s attention. She is very talented but not confident enough.

Symour

When his girlfriend invited him to Dance

“Are you kidding me? Dance? My poor waist! I’m over this time.”
“Why now days women cannot just sit quietly and talk nicely?”
“I hate pop music, the cheapest thing in the world, even a dog can bark better than this.”

Protagonist-Enid in the movie “Ghost World”

Enid, in this movie, dresses often with short skirts, in contrasting colors especially. She wears glasses most of the time but changes it whenever she feels in the mood to have a change. She won’t be bothered by what other’s opinions either, I suppose. She can put on any outfit, like a Cat Woman’s mask or a red mesh hat which half covers a half of her head in the plain day light. These aren’t seen commonly even of that time in the movie.

Roberta-the art teacher (monologue)

The first class

“They can learn a lot from my video, there are tons of works I’ve put in. And there is this point they are far from to reach to.”
“Seems like here are some interesting faces, I can tell by the first glance.
“What these kids will put together at the end of this class, I wonder.”
“Just wait and see, Ha!”

Enid:
From the beginning of the movie Enid likes to criticize people around her and shows empathy for lonely people. She usually wears showy stockings and colourful skirts or blouses that contrast with her very dark hair, glasses and extravagant boots. Once she coloured her hair green and wore green lipstick. Certainty, she wants to show how she feels: different.

Rebecca:
When Enid comes to Rebecca’s job’s place, and Enid answers to Rebecca that she hasn’t found a job:
“What are you thinking? How come you haven’t found a job?”
“I can’t understand”
“Don’t you want to move?”
“I want to move right now”
“I can’t wait longer”
“I want to move”
“What a loser”

The protagonist's trait:

Enid in "Ghost World" was a kind of an appositional person. Most time, she wasn't interested in meeting or talking with a new person, she usually had a scowling face; While facing to a new person, she started glancing her eyes, shrugging her shoulder, pouting her lip, and then looking away. Sometimes, she liked to pick on others.

Josh in the restaurant with Enid and Rebecca (monologue)

"Oh my god! These two girls are too opened in the public. They don't feel embarrassed while they are swearing and using dirty words".

"I wished I was sitting outside, so I could leave a bit for excuses".

"Come on you girls, we should order quick, and eat, and we have to go".

About Enid

Enid went back to Seymour's garage sale, because she liked the record what he recommended, and was more curious about his sense than himself. She was a person who loves something different with others, but she didn't choose to be an unique. So, probably she was happy to find Seymour who has same sense of music, collections, and feelings.

About Enid's dad

In the kitchen, when Maxine asked to Enid about what she is studying now.

"Oh, Maxine, please don't ask that to my pumpkin. That's a very sensitive topic."

Enid said to Maxine
[I'm taking a remedial high school art class for fuck-ups and retards.]

"Well, I hope that Maxine's question didn't let her down."

"God bless to you, Pumpkin, I will always be there for you."

Observing Enid throughout the movie, I would say that she is a very childish and immature person because she does not want change in her life. This characteristic of hers is showed whenever something or someone around her decides to walk a new path. She becomes jealous and moody when she sees Seymour’s relationship with Dana becomes more serious. Moreover, she can’t commit to her friend, Rebecca, who wants to grow up and get an apartment together.

Enid is a girl with art talent. She draws a lot of good pictures of characters she meet in her daily life. She is kind of weird by her behaviour. She left a message on Josh’s apartment “gay”. She can not settled down with one fixed job or boring work. She likes music. She might think old man “Seymour” is attractive to her through music. She is not fit in the real world so she takes the bus to the end of her destiny. Word count 84

Seymour is a little bit like me. I did not dance well and skinny outlook. I like to listen to music a lot. I am not a good talker. I did not dress up well. I am not a party animal. He did not think that Enid will sleep with him. He confused with the act of Enid. He is a lonely man. His life style was simple. He must like Enid because they both like art and music.

Enid

Enid is very judgmental of everyone she sees, hears about, or reads about. She completely judged Seymour based on the posting he made in the newspaper. Enid later found herself becoming somewhat obsessed with Seymour. Ironically, Enid is very quick to get her back up if someone judges her. She acts as if no one can get inside her head. Enid reacted hastily when she was being ridiculed for dying her hair green. She immediately changed it back to black, showing that her attitude is merely skin deep.

Enid’s Dad

Enid’s dad is clearly a very calm man. He never “tells” Enid to do anything, he only “suggests.” If he is not holding a bowl cooking, then he has in hands tucked away in his pockets at all times. It is clear he cares a great deal about Enid, but he is missing the picture. He seems to have a lack of confidence, he turn a blind eye to Enid despising his girlfriend.

About Enid

Enid has a spirit to oppose everything which is normally accepted in our society. In the beginning, when the girl, as a moralist, gives a graduation speech, Enid frowns and shows a disdainful look. After graduates exuberantly walk out of the auditorium, Enid gives the finger and treads her mortarboard down to the floor. Her outfit is another clue. She prefers dark color, and kind of old-fashion clothes. The glasses she wears mostly are framed in black. As a result, I sense gloominess strongly in her.

Rebecca in Seymour’s garage sale when Enid asks Seymour about the records (monologue)

“Come on, let’s go now. You don’t have to talk to him”

“We have followed him, checked his mail. He’s totally a pathetic geek. Is that not enough for you? Why do you need to talk? Listen to his garbage! Ridiculous!”

“Enid, you are wasting time. There’s no fun. Let me out of here!”

“A-ha! He offers refund. What a perfect customer service!”

“Weirdo.”

For the protagonist;

Enid is a punky teenager with bobbed hair, huge eyeglasses and wears unconventional clothes. Her chosen style is influence of an earlier time. She likes Indian and blues music. She is very artistic, but ironically, she has to go to summer classes to take art class. She is very outspoken. She and her best friend Rebecca are having difficulties to spend time with other people. She likes to criticize people. She likes to trash talk and tends to act without thinking.

For your assigned character:

Seymour was so scared when Enid did a prank as she pretended that she is going to drop the record. Seymour, on the second time, fell on Enid’s prank. She was approaching him quietly from behind and said “Boo!” .Seymour freaked out. This moment made Seymour shivered and embarrassed. I can see that Seymour is very anxious.
