  1. English 12 Students Writing Their First Poem

Muffled whispers on a short flight, student to student
I only catch, “How do you say …?”
Rarely a spoken word, yet never quite silent
Oblivious to the monstrous trucks speeding by

    Pen flipping,
    Feet swinging,
    Madly scrawling
Ideas flowing from imagination to paper

    Thermos of coffee at hand
Heads bowed, as if in reverence to the art of poetry
The lack of smiles could be mistaken for anger
Yet their eyes show that determination is their sentiment

    (first draft)

Please note that I did not write the minimum 15 lines that I've asked you to write in your poems!

  2. On Writing Poetry

    “Nothing’s a gift; it’s all on loan.”—Wislawa Szymborska

    before you go
    remember
    writing lines
    speaking words
    our laughter
    our silence
    our pens
    searching

    voice your poems
    our eyes our ears
    will listen

    hear your words
    for the first time
    on tongues on breath

    remember
    destroying silence
    keeping nothingness at bay

  3. Struggling in the Cage

    His eyes turned into dispirited,
    His lips vibrated towards nobody,
His one hand robbed the bar and the other squeezed the bait.

Been sitting there over 36 hours,
    People inside would rather smell rotten eggs than his smelly odour;
Been fighting in this past-glorious cage,
People outside would see through the true color of adventure,
    But can’t do anything.

He said, “If I win this time, I will no longer come back to this casino.”
He also said, “This is my last bet taking from my daughter’s college fund.”
Vacillatingly left the chips on the table,
Promptly collected the winnings, holding tightly onto his chest like his new-born baby.

    Still there,
    Still struggling.
Like the animal trapped into the tempting cage,
Totally lost the self-esteem and dignity,
The only way could make his eye wide and shining,
Always be talking about his few “memorable” nights as a lucky star.
    Then,
    Still there,
    Still struggling.

  5. Cherry Blossoms and Snow

    Pink and white
    cherry blossoms
    flutter among the branches
    like the butterflies.
    The air is fragrant.

    The snow flake
    fall from the sky,
    kissing the petals.
    A marvelous sight!

    Picking up the camera
    Rushing out the house
    Flashing ceaselessly
    Enjoying ecstatically

    The most beautiful flowers’ pictures
    I have ever taken.
    It’s an amazing day.

  6. Labyrinth

    I woke up this morning
    And my mind was lost
A weak fist against the wall made me cry
Life is like a falling airplane
    There is nothing, but tears

    The clock doesn’t stop
    Is hammering in my head
People marching, strolling, talking and I’m here
With no clue of what this theater performance is
With no idea of what role I should play

A soft breeze from the arctic pushed the trees
    They pull themselves back up
Then I realized life is a tough game
Sinking to learn how to swim
Fighting to learn how to live

  7. I want to be a Goddess
To rule the whole world in my way,
To be a friend with Zeus and Venus,
To wear golden robe which’s made

    From people’s laughter – color,
    From human’s kindness – sleeves,
From hundreds dreams – the skirt
    Which goes bellow my knees.

    I want to have tiara
To keep all stars in it,
And crescent, in my flowing heir,
To hold them as a glowing clip.

A wind that swings my bed
    Before I fall asleep.
    A unicorn – a pet,
    God Aris – guarding “pit”.

I want to be a Goddess
    To live Olympus’ life
To lull the Globe in my arms
    And never let world cry.

  8. My Love
    ——for mother’s day

Count the wrinkle lines in your face,
    Dear mum.
The same number as my age.
Still pat my back as before,
    Time stops between us.

Pick the white hairs on your head,
    Dear mum.
    Such a naively thought..
    Growing up of the kids,
    Steal the color from you.

    Grab hold of your hands,
    Dear mum.
    Slack skin with rubber.
    The endless of busy washing,
    Take away its smooth shape.

Write a rough poem to tell my love,
    Dear mum.
    Read loudly beside your ear.
The familiar smell of your body,
    Warm my eyes in tears.

    Nothing can returns your give,
    Dear mum.
    Your infinite love,
Like a lantern, light the way.
    Your selfless love,
Like an umbrella, shield the rain.

  9. Smartest Kids on the Show

    The show started as usual
    The famous and charismatic lady
Always smiles and has a childish body language
    Came out of her cage

The audience was jumping and shouting non-stop
Everyone clapping like a child who saw her picture on the mirror
Audience had a colorful and fun expression
    Everyone looked different from other

Small individuals but with huge talent:
    Ethan 7-year-old piano prodigy
The audiences were on their foot for entire her performance
26 months Lilly had memorized all the countries around the world

    All acting perfectly
    They are different
    They are special
They are God's gift to their parents

  10. Perseverance

A massive touch from the sky
    greenish emerald radiance presence has
all I want is to live near by
to relax and meditate with my heart.

I was born near to him
from my childhood to my teens
I left when I was eighteen
then, I realize I couldn’t live far away from him.

    One day, I’ll comeback
to admire the gleam of his crystal waves
I miss the hugs of his breeze
I cannot wait to savour his salt again.

My body squeeze when I think
how close it can be our time
    I seen eagles soaring high
it seems they know the ocean is a place to land.

  11. Daemonesquè

My angel of the Wild Hunt from a heaven he was sent
To doom guilty souls of the night bringing a promise of torment

His fairy wings were made of ice, his demon eyes were made of flame
His voice boomed like a sweet song across a bloody field now tame

“Beware,” he warned, “Who may lay to rest upon this wary grave
At the darkest time of the witching hour you may hear them rave:

‘I give you life and sugared love, a snakes charm to rest
So you may never strive again or ever bid your best.’

“Don’t be fooled this is no game that they seek your heart
For the fallen call out to this realm ‘it is only an art’”

And with that said a roar of hellish fire burst from his lungs
All who mourned fell upon those who spoke in tongues

They clawed and begged, screeching for their souls
Raging and conniving only crying for control

They knew ‘no wicked’ what they had done was ‘surely not deceit’
Their constant lies in angel cries mourned not for defeat

Soon the golden acid of the sun crept upon the hills
Morning dew that petrified giving the foul violent chills

There they remained in perfect form, now complete in statuesque
“My lovelies,” he cooed, “Now we see your darkest Daemonesquè.”
